My kids just downloaded the latest Vampire Weekend Album, and I was listening to some of the music in the car, and I really like it. It’s got a nice beat and you can dance to it. I’m surprised at how much music affects me. I can turn happy or sad, or start to dance in the car, or sing (only if I’m alone), but I do love the radio, especially while driving. Currently, I’m gaga over Lady Gaga, and I wrote my last book to Bad Romance, which, as a romance author, I probably shouldn’t admit to, but it fit the story and should not be taken as a reflection on the quality of the writing.
But my current fav is Evacuate the Dancefloor by Cascada. Whenever that comes on, I do the car-seat dance, which involves a lot of up and down hip movements and coordinating Bob Fosse jazz-hands. Sometimes I will do jazz-hands in front of the kids, but usually it’s a solo sort of moment because they get nervous when Mom transforms into OMG-You-Were-A-Real-Geeky-Young-Person. I think it’s sort of the reverse of when you hear your mother’s words coming out of your own mouth, those words that, at the age of fifteen, you swore you would never say. I think my kids are getting a glimpse into their own future, when someday, they will do Bob Fosse jazz-hands and embarrass the children of their own. And of course, you know it’s going to happen.
So, the question today is what song makes you move, and please describe movements in detail so that we can all share in the visual. Bonus points if you can make us laugh, because

Hmmm , no real answer, but we pulled up “The Land Down Under” on YouTube for the girls yesterday and watched the music video. The kids were cracking up–both at the vid and at me and dh’s moves…
Oh, and at Halloween I downloaded Monster Mash for the kids. THAT one embarrassed them
I’m watching SAG awards pre-show! Almost forgot it was on!
You are the award show queen!!!!!
Just got back from Sherlock Holmes. It ROCKED.
la bamba.. that’s another toe tapper
I do not know that Evacuate the Dance Floor song. But when I find it, I’m going to have to do jazz-hands in tribute.
Stupid songs get me to move. Like Tequila. Black Eyed Peas It’s a Good Night (whatever) makes me want to move…but I don’t, hahahaha.
I was at a wedding recently and the Chicken Dance is always a sure-fire winner for getting young and old on the dance floor. Come on…you know you love it too!
P.S. I should qualify by stating most of my dancing is done in the car. I’m a bouncer.
I love the Chicken Dance. Now that song is in my head. Ack!
I love Vampire Weekend. I also ended up taking over my daughter’s MCR (My Chemical Romance) and Killers CDs. Why are we still buying music on CD? Our car is old-fashioned that way, so sometimes if I’m going to like the music too, I have her order it as a CD which we can load to our iTunes lists and then use in the car. She also loves Mika and Muse, and I’ve tried to leave those alone so her Mom doesn’t ruin all the cool music– but I’m starting to like Muse now, too.
I’m not allowed to play music when a) her friends are in the car or b) she’s about to open the car door. I guess it would be somehow embarrassing if her friends discovered that I like their music, too? I’ve thought about saving the Duran Duran for just these occasions. When she’s saucy in the mornings, I plan to roll down the windows at drop off time with Duran squared blaring full blast as I ask loudly across the parking lot if she remembered her lunch and tell her to let a smile be her umbrella . Haven’t done it yet. But one day. They’re not so worried about my dancing as they are about things I might say out loud in front of the wrong people. But my daughter did catch me dancing around the kitchen while making dinner one day and she just laughed and said, “Mom, I love you.” Which translates to “Oh Mom you silly ol’ lady who does not have it going on, bless you for trying.”
Actually just bought Rio. And La Bamba. And I love the Killers. Got the latter from my daughter. and we did just recently have a one hit wonders of the 60’s 70’s and 80’s contest. Daughter played the bit off itunes and husband and I had to guess. Golden Earring anyone??
I can name two Golden Earring hits off the bat, but I’ll save it for someone else with a mind for trivia to answer. Loved 80s MTV, watched too much of it. Now they don’t even play videos, do they?
A song I can never sit still to is Brick House by the Commodores. I don’t know how to describe my moves other than sweet. There’s a lot of head-bobbing and fierce undulating involved. It’s one of the permanent songs on my exercise playlist. In general, though, I love listening to music. I’ve always got it on in the car and at work. I also love to sing, so I’m usually joining along, which my daughter can’t stand. Her usual complaint is that I’m ruining the music for her.
You know, I’m totally not surprised. That’s definitely a theme song for KC if ever there was one.
Freshman year — college. God, I love that song. And Fantasy — sophomore year…
