Kathleen Givens

Kathleen Givens

Kathleen Givens was born in New York City, but spent her early years living in the Northeast and Georgia before landing in Southern California. As a result, she is fluent in Valley Girl, Steel Magnolia, and Manhattanite. She travels extensively and has often served as a translator between American English and U.K. English, a derivative language. Her services have reached diplomatic levels. Or rather, she tries to be diplomatic.

She made her writing debut at the age of ten with a rewrite of Little Women, in which Jo marries Laurie and no one dies. Surprisingly, it is not in print. In high school she and a friend wrote a dreadful 250-page play about an English rock group. Even more surprisingly, it is also not in print. Her official writing career began in 1999, and she continues to write strong, heroic women who face all that life throws at them - and get cute guys in kilts.

Kathleen lives with His Majesty in California, in a tragically flawed house with the neurotic and dictatorial cat Formerly Known as Miss Lily. As the oldest of the Whine Sisters, she has the unsought responsibility of correcting her siblings, which has cut into her writing time. She is hoping that they will eventually mature and share her vision of the world.

Astrological Sign: Virgo

Favorite Leading Man: His Majesty

Favorite Food: Chocolate. Or chocolate.

Happy Fourth of July!

The Whine Sisters will be waving flags, watching fireworks, and barbequing everything in sight this weekend.  We’re hoping you have a wonderful holiday too.  It’s a great time to read a Whine Sisters book (see our latest releases on the left) while you’re lounging on that hammock. Have fun, y’all! Share this:

The Bucket List

by Kathleen Givens
image

We’ve been talking a lot about death far too much lately, all of us.  Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, Billy Mays, have all captured the news media attention, and we, willing or not, have had to think about the final check out.  I was already weary of it all, so it was with trepidation [...]

I Am Going to Heaven!  Maybe.

by Kathleen Givens
image

Well, it looks like I’ve got a shot at going to heaven after all.  I had assumed, after decades of bad thoughts, and five years of publicly whining and serving snark (not to mention all my evil deeds), that I would be headed elsewhere.  But after last Friday night, I now know I have at [...]

Adam Lambert is Gay, The Olsen Twins are too Skinny, and Other Things We Already Knew

by Kathleen Givens
image

I don’t understand the uproar about the “revelation” that Adam Lambert is gay.  Hello!  And so what?  He’s a great entertainer and I imagine we’ll be seeing him and his guyliner for decades.  Add him to the ranks of Elton John, Ellen de Generes, etc.  Another Hello! goes to a local paper here, who just [...]

It’s a Big Day!

by Kathleen Givens

Here we go – the start of summer!  OK, so officially we have to wait a few more weeks, but we all know that summer starts on Memorial Day, so let’s celebrate!  Breakout the lemonade.  Fire up the barbeque.  Find those flip-flops.  And grab a good book to read under an umbrella.  Julia London’s got [...]

Memorial Day

by Kathleen Givens

I’m not usually overly sentimental about national holidays, but I recently heard about the death of the older brother of a high school friend.  Dave was 19 when he was drafted for Vietnam.  His father had been a WWII hero, so off Dave went to war, thinking he would be John Wayne, and finding a [...]

Something Good to Watch For a Change

by Kathleen Givens
image

Now that almost every series on TV is winding down to the last show, it’s time to find something else good to watch.  I’ve got two great suggestions, both on HBO, The first, which aired for the first time last month, is “Grey Gardens”, starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, who are superb in this [...]

What Wrong With This Picture?

by Kathleen Givens
image

Well, actually, there’s nothing wrong with this picture.  The picture itself, I mean.  Except what is up with that fingernail?  But I digress. Interesting news arrived today along with the new postal rates, up again this year to $0.44.  Seems that postal workers got the highest percentage hike in salary in the country.  Apparently losing [...]

Welcoming Bobama

by Kathleen Givens

At last, the wait is over!  Bo has arrived in the White House.  Yawn.  I love dogs.  I really do.  But honestly, I do not want to hear another word about the dog decision that two little girls made.  For Pete’s sake, people, lay off these folks.  Yes, Obama said they would choose a rescue [...]

Stop the violence against chocolate Easter bunnies!!!!  If we each do our part, someday there will be a tiime when we do not have to post pictures like this to draw attention to this terrible situation.  Eat Dove dark chocolate eggs instead!  Or celery. Nah.  Go for it. Share this:

Sometimes It Just Has to Be Said

by Kathleen Givens

Yes, I know Easter is supposed to be a time of reflection and joy, but some people just beg for this kind of comment.  I think Miley’s cover shot is a perfect example of a deserving someone.  Her hair looks horrible!  Lady Gaga (aka Lady Gag Me) is another excellent candidate, but I would so [...]

Where Are They Now?

by Kathleen Givens
image

I got an email today from one of my very first readers who apparently lurks on the Whine Sisters a lot, but never comments (like a thousand others each day – literally).  Her message was short:  WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?  HAS JULIA BEEN DEMOTED?  IS SHERRI DOING A TAKEOVER OF THE BLOG?  IF SO, SHE’S [...]

When Writers Go Wild

by Kathleen Givens

Ever wonder where the Whine Sisters go when we’re not posting about significant things in our world, like fashion and our favorite foods and what annoys us? Think we’re writing, crafting tomes of such exquisiteness that students will be studying and analyzing our work for generations? Nah.  I hate to say it, but we go [...]

Why Men Don’t Write Advice Columns

by Kathleen Givens

Dear Walter, I hope you can help me here. The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn’t driven more than a mile down the road when the engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to [...]

Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

by Kathleen Givens

Well, isn’t this fun, to have so many liars to talk about?  There’s the owner of the Peanut Corporation of America, Stewart Parnell, who refused to testify to Congress today, but whose company has been caught red-handed selling infected food.  Six hundred people made ill and nine deaths and he’s taking the Fifth.  And there’s [...]

This Explains So Much

by Kathleen Givens

As you know, our own Julia London lives in Austin, TX, where these pictures were recently published.  I knew folks were a little different in Texas, but zombies?  Really?  Who knew?  The road signs, maintained by Austin’s road crews, couldn’t be wrong, could they?  So . . . if not, then maybe the end is [...]
