Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

When Julie (aka JK) was very little, she used to climb up the spiral staircase to her dad's study (yes, he had the cool room), sit at his desk, and bang out "stories" on his typewriter. Without saying how many (cough) years ago (cough, cough) that was, Julie will say that she used to type so fast that the keys on the typewriter got all stuck together, and she'd have to pry them apart carefully and quietly, and hope nobody noticed and she didn't get in trouble. A few years later, she moved on to writing stories with actual words, and the pen (and/or typewriter) moved more slowly. The stories in her head, however, didn't. They just kept buzzing away in there, demanding to be let out, and Julie figured the only thing she could do about that was go stark raving mad ... or become a writer (Ed Note: those two things are not actually mutually exclusive, but let's not mention that to Julie!). Julie still has the stories, characters, people, voices, whatever rattling around inside of her head, and, in fact, she's even got a bit of a split personality. In fact, her other half might just nudge her way into the Whine Sisters blog one of these days. Bwahahahahahahahahaha. Ahem. Julie lives in Texas, just a (very long) stone's throw from Julia (someone really should make a movie title out of those names!), with her husband, two energetic daughters, and two temperamental cats. And they call these folks managers???????? What exactly are they managing except to annoy me???

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I’m irritated. Thus the picture. (OK, technically my irritation has faded as it’s been a couple of days, but it’s on my mind again, so I thought I’d share). Here’s the deal: My mom went into the hospital a couple of weeks ago. It was miserable and scary and generally unfun. (She’s doing well now, [...]

Breakfast of the day

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

Today’s post is brought to you by: OMG this is so delicious may I please have another one thank you. (Actually, I’ll be making another one for the eldest child when she wakes, so I’ll edit w/ a picture later.) Here’s what you do. Buy some langostino lobster tails. As it says on this website, [...]

The changing face of entertainment

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I’m late to the party, and if you are, too, go read Sherri’s post from yesterday. I just did, and it prompted me to write this rambling post. Because I think the whole famewhore thing is just gross. Which may be a bit hypocritical, b/c I do watch the Real Housewives (but in my defense, [...]

Ten years??? Ten years???? HOW did that happen?

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

Today is my daughter Catherine’s tenth birthday, and I’m sitting here wondering where the heck the time went. (I’m also sitting here, a bit like Kathleen, wondering what the heck to blog about!). So today is an homage to my little girl who’s not so little anymore! Shhhhh! Don’t tell her, but here’s a rerun [...]

do you know where your water comes from?

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I don’t normally think a whole lot about water. I need a shower, I take a shower. I have dirty dishes, I wash them. The veggies look droopy, I water them. The grass looks brown, I turn on the sprinkler. And then a pipe bursts. Not just any pipe. No, some sort of pipey-pumpy gizmo [...]

The Birthday Babe

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

For the record, this is NOT going up late because I forgot. It’s going up late because the food at Disney just looked so yummy that I couldn’t bear to post a new blog. Really. No, REALLY. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.) All right, fine. Don’t believe me. Okay, I confess: I [...]

Spooky….

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

Oh, yeah, baby! It’s that time of year! HALLOWEEN! The time when we hang our ghosts from the mantle, and the Great Pumpkin comes down the oven vent and fills them with candy. Oh, wait. That’s not right. The time when we leave pumpkin pie under our pillow, and the Squash Fairy comes and leaves [...]

My mind is a blank

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

So, I sat down last night to write today’s blog, and realized I had no idea what I wanted to write about. No problem, I thought. I’d go to bed, refresh my brain, get up early and write something witty and pithy. Yeah, right. Apparently, my brain is on strike (more likely, it’s focused on [...]

Ringtone Mania

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

So, there are a lot of things I like about my iPhone, but lately I’ve gone a little bit wacky with the ringtones. (And, yes, I realize all phones have ringtones, but still…) For a while there, if you wanted anything other than the “normal” buzzes and beeps (or, I think, a few precut ringtones), [...]

Kid envy

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

Well, it’s that time of year again. The kidlets are all getting involved in various extracurricular things…and I’m thinking, “Oh, man! I wish I’d done that as a kid!” Piano, for one thing. (And to be honest, when they first started, I did 15 minutes w/ the teacher, too. But I just didn’t have time [...]

Back to it…

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I’ve been “detoxing” over the long weekend and a few days before–trying to get the house straight (after 11 months here, it’s about time), thinking about revisions but forcing myself not to write just yet until it’s all in my head, organizing school for the girls, working in the yard, melting in the heat, and [...]

Busy day, lazy morning, rambling post

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I spent yesterday doing the Armadillocon writing workshop and talking with friends. A great day, though it started early! But here’s the weird thing (to those of you that know me well) — early doesn’t bug me anymore! I’m down to one cuppa joe in the am, and I’m waking up before 7 on the [...]

If ya wanna get noticed…

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I love walking around barefoot, but in 100+ temperatures, I don’t love burning the soles of my feet on asphalt and concrete. So as an early birthday present, I bought myself a pair of Vibram 5-fingers. Yes, they look a bit … odd. But OMG, they are soooo comfortable. I mean SO comfortable. I could [...]

Kitties happen

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I’m not really sure how it happened, but we have a new kitty, as of about 1pm yesterday. It started innocently enough. We took our oldest cat Tiger to the vet. She’s been losing weight and lately has become a little bit listless. Back in, oh, April I think, we got another kitten, Mia. And [...]

Going healthy…

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I’m cheating a teensy bit here, because I’ve been blogging about fitness and diet stuff recently, but I haven’t really shared that blog with my readers or tweeps or Facebook friends, and this post contains a lot of info from another recent post. But I want to share, so I figured it made sense to [...]

Groupon-mania

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I don’t remember how I discovered Groupon, though I’m sure it had something to do with spending too much time on the Internet. But I have to say, it’s paid off. My first Groupons were some lovely deals for steak dinners at one of Austin’s steakhouses. And I got a Groupon for a neat little [...]

Craft Day!

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

While we were at the beach a few weeks ago, we went into a lovely hotel in Galveston, the Galvez, and had drinks in the bar. Isabella and I went into the ladies’ room at one point, and they had a bowl between the two sinks filled with mushy-gushy stuff. Isabella asked what it was, [...]

Rite of Passage

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

So, I took the 9yo to see a doublefeature of HP7 part 1 and part 2 starting at 8:45pm Thursday night, with part 2 starting at exactly 12:01. And, yeah, it was cool. She was excited to see the many Hermione’s and Lunas. A few Harry’s. A few Freds and George’s, and even a few [...]

Scary stuff….

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I’ve been on a horror movie kick lately. The other night, Don and I watched The Ring, one of my all time favorites. And although I remember being viscerally creeped out by that movie, what impressed me the most was how smart it felt. This second time, I still really liked it. Liked how all [...]

Farmer Brown, I’m not

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I’m blaming it on the intense Texas heat, but this year has not been a banner crop year in the Kenner backyard. Granted, this is only the second year we’ve tried to grow anything to eat, but last year we had cucumbers coming out of our ears (well, coming out of our garden boxes, anyway). [...]

Breaking news

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

Got the e-postcard that’s pictured the other day from my 9 yo daughter, which goes a long way to explaining just why I so very, very, very much need the vacation I’m currently on (writing this early–I’m actually in a car on my way back from what I’m quite confident was a fabulous time at [...]
