Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck
When Julie (aka JK) was very little, she used to climb up the spiral staircase to her dad's study (yes, he had the cool room), sit at his desk, and bang out "stories" on his typewriter. Without saying how many (cough) years ago (cough, cough) that was, Julie will say that she used to type so fast that the keys on the typewriter got all stuck together, and she'd have to pry them apart carefully and quietly, and hope nobody noticed and she didn't get in trouble. A few years later, she moved on to writing stories with actual words, and the pen (and/or typewriter) moved more slowly. The stories in her head, however, didn't. They just kept buzzing away in there, demanding to be let out, and Julie figured the only thing she could do about that was go stark raving mad ... or become a writer (Ed Note: those two things are not actually mutually exclusive, but let's not mention that to Julie!). Julie still has the stories, characters, people, voices, whatever rattling around inside of her head, and, in fact, she's even got a bit of a split personality. In fact, her other half might just nudge her way into the Whine Sisters blog one of these days. Bwahahahahahahahahaha. Ahem. Julie lives in Texas, just a (very long) stone's throw from Julia (someone really should make a movie title out of those names!), with her husband, two energetic daughters, and two temperamental cats. Winter is coming, she said. And at the same time she also said: Last night we watched the final episode of Season 1, and it was awesome. There were no “Who Shot JR” sort of cheap cliff-hangers that abound in television today. Instead, for Season 2 (starting on April 1st on HBO), we get the [...]

I recently ran across this short film, Porcelain Unicorn, which won the Tell It Your way competition (3 minutes long, 6 specific lines of dialogue). I wasn’t expecting to be so moved, especially with only three minutes, but I’ve watched it twice now — once when I found it, and once when I showed it [...]

I don’t like working out. There. I’ve said it. I don’t get that runner’s high. I don’t feel deprived when I can’t go to the gym. And I’m not a fan of residual sweat on the Nautilus machines. I mean, ick. But at the same time, I’m not keen on having flabby thighs and a [...]

Sadly, there aren’t that many movies hitting the screen that I’m excited about anymore. I’m not sure if it’s the state of Hollywood or the fact that I’m not 21 anymore (though just barely past that, of course). But I’ve been to a couple recently, and that means I’ve seen trailers. And most of the [...]

I, ah, was planning on writing my blog this morning before I raced out the door for an exciting day of blood tests and errands. But I overslept and must now write this, rouse kids, get dressed and get to CPL in approximately 2.7 minutes. So that means…drumroll…I’m putting the onus on you! Yes, YOU! [...]

I’ve been re-watching Lost lately (I think I mentioned that in a recent blog post), and it’s a lot of fun. But there’s one big problem, and it’s the same problem I run across as I read The Hunger Games with my eldest kiddo (we need to finish this week in time to see the [...]

So, I think I made a Big Mistake. In a moment of extreme non-lucidity, I randomly suggested for God only knows what reason that the girls and I have a backyard campout. Let me qualify that statement so the import is apparent: I’ve never camped out before in a tent except for one time in [...]

I don’t watch a lot of television, and when I do, I’m usually a number of seasons behind (and, yeah, I re-watch shows once a series has wrapped). These days, I’m watching The Vampire Diaries and Ringer, both of which I’m enjoying tremendously. I’m rewatching Lost, and I’m waiting for Mad Men (soon!). I’ve given [...]

I’ve been doing a lot of rearranging in my garage these days, and in the process, I came across the picture to the left. That’s me back during my freshman year in college. Lest you jump to the same conclusion as my poor, put upon father, let me explain: I started out as a journalism [...]

Even though I worked for years in New Orleans, I never did the Mardi Gras thing. (Fabulous times–I worked for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and would go with the judge I worked for and stay for about a week several times a year.) Why not? Because crowds make me antsy, and Bourbon Street [...]

I’m annoyed at some neighborhood boys, and at myself for not knowing how to handle the moment in the moment (it’s really too late now and, to be honest, I wasn’t around “in the moment” but heard about it later). But I fear that this won’t be the last time… Sigh. It sucks being Mom [...]

I have a cool new MacBook Air, and in playing with it, I discovered FaceTime. Okay, full disclosure: actually, it doesn’t work…gripe, gripe…The one thing on my nice little computing device that isn’t functioning as advertised. But I do have it on my phone, and it works fine there. The thing is, I’m not sure [...]

Yesterday, I shared a buncha covers on my blog for incoming Demon Hunting Soccer Mom books (I hope you guys go take a look! The post is here!) I’m super excited to be diving into the world of indie/ePublishing, and as I told some commenters to the blog and Facebook page, one of the things [...]

I love our new house, don’t get me wrong, but there are things that builders are doing nowadays that either baffle me or are aesthetically pleasing and yet practically annoying. Eight foot ceilings fall into that latter category. Have you ever tried to change a lightbulb while balancing on a flimsy Ikea bar stool? I [...]

Let’s talk action-gals, shall we? Because there was a point in my life, when I thought that being Buffy or Sydney Bristow (Alias is my current pm comfort watch) would be so dang cool. I mean, they’re smart (even though Buffy always says she isn’t), they look great in all sorts of clothes, and they [...]

The weekend’s starting in 2011 and ending in 2012. How cool is that? What’s your number one new year’s resolution? Mine is to put up blog posts longer than three sentences, bwahahaha! But seriously, here’s wishing everyone a safe, happy, wonderful new year filled with friends and family and joy galore. Share this:

No, not THAT kind (although there have been two–count ‘em, two–home invasions in Georgetown recently…yikes! No, I’m talking about the good kind. The party kind! We’re having a work-related holiday party at our house tomorrow night. I’m looking forward to the food and the company…but what I’m really looking forward to is the pre-invasion result: [...]

Oops. We waited way too long to get our little girl kitten spayed. How do I know we’ve waited too long? Because this cat has a serious itch that she can’t scratch (and her best buddy, another female who was spayed by the human society at about 1 week old has no clue what’s going [...]

We’ve been in this house for over a year now, and I have finally….finally! Organized the shelf in my office. This is such a momentous occasion that I feel the need to share it with the world. As you can see, it’s one of those triple bookshelves. On the left, we have a bunch of [...]
