Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

When Julie was very little, she used to climb up the spiral staircase to her dad's study (yes, he had the cool room), sit at his desk, and bang out "stories" on his typewriter. Without saying how many (cough) years ago (cough, cough) that was, Julie will say that she used to type so fast that the keys on the typewriter got all stuck together, and she'd have to pry them apart carefully and quietly, and hope nobody noticed and she didn't get in trouble. A few years later, she moved on to writing stories with actual words, and the pen (and/or typewriter) moved more slowly. The stories in her head, however, didn't. They just kept buzzing away in there, demanding to be let out, and Julie figured the only thing she could do about that was go stark raving mad ... or become a writer (Ed Note: those two things are not actually mutually exclusive, but let's not mention that to Julie!). Julie still has the stories, characters, people, voices, whatever rattling around inside of her head, and, in fact, she's even got a bit of a split personality. In fact, her other half might just nudge her way into the Whine Sisters blog one of these days. Bwahahahahahahahahaha. Ahem. Julie lives in Texas, just a (very long) stones throw from Julia (someone really should make a movie title out of those names!), with her husband, two energetic daughters, and two temperamental cats. Not Really Pop Culture Monday…

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

So I looked at my calendar wrong, and thought I was writing about Good Buys, which would be an easy subject for me because I found the Best Freaking Buy Ever recently, both because I need it desperately as I finish up this book, and also because it’s free. It’s Mac Freedom, and it’s [...]

Question of the week: Conferences. Love ‘em? Hate ‘em?

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

As you read this (unless you’re reading it very late in the day), I’ll be participating on a panel and delivering the keynote speech at the Tarrant County College writer’s conference. And on Friday, I was at the Irving Club’s Tea in Lockhart speaking about being an author (I’m writing this on Thursday, but [...]

Good Buys/Good Books: Gone With The Wind

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I recently finished reading Gone With The Wind (following a viewing with my husband for the umpty-millionth time), and I have to say I am truly blown away by this book (haha – “blown” – get it?). (And, yes, by the movie, too, though this is Good BOOK Tuesday…).
One of the things I find [...]

The Internet has Destroyed my Pop Culture IQ

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

So, you’d think that the Internet–with all it’s connectivity and info at your fingertips yada yada yada–would have made me more pop culture aware.
It hasn’t.
Now, granted, I’ve never been the most pop culturally aware gal on the planet. I don’t think I’ve ever watched the Grammy’s (the Oscars are a different story–I [...]

Question of the Day-What the heck is this???

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I have a tendency to not only work late, but to also scribble notes to myself that end up scattered around my desk. Usually, they’re about the work-in-progress, especially if I’m in revisions. I’ll have a gazillion Post-its about Things To Do as I’m revising, and I know when revisions are complete when [...]

Writers Corner: Spurring Creative Juices

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

My oldest daughter is about as creative as they come.
Okay, that’s a significant part Mommy talking, but the kid really does make up some wild and crazy stories. And she’ll invent worlds and friends and bizarre situations. Leave the kids in their room to play for a couple of hours, and [...]

Whiny Wednesday-Ptooey on housework!

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

It. Never. Ends.
Never.
Seriously.
Come on, you know what I’m talking about. That dirty, dirty word: Housework.
Every night, I load the dishwasher. Every morning, I unload it. And grumble grumble fuss and mumble, every dang night it has to be loaded again! (I swear, environment be damned, I’m switching to paper plates, [...]

Good Buy/Book Tuesday

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

I’m having a hard time writing this entry because it feels like it marks “going back to normal,” and yet it’s not normal at all. And Good Buy seems so much like good-bye.
So I tried to think of a Good Buy or a Good Book that would be sort of a transitional post, [...]

The Cutting Edge – Good Buy Tuesday…

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

There’s something bizarre about talking about good buys in the days following the biggest commercial/retail season of the year. As if you’re saying, “hey, did all your gifts suck? Well, go get this!” Or, perhaps, you’re just saying, “Hey, need something to buy with that gift card…?”
If it’s the latter, then I [...]

Red is the New Black

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

If Julia were posting today, undoubtedly we’d see Jacquie Photoshopped into a Santa suit. Alas, I don’t have Photoshop on my computer, and even if I did, I’m just not that talented. But first and foremost, happy birthday Jacquie!!!!!

As for fashion (and how appropriate is that, as Jacquie is always the height of [...]

Writer’s Corner: What’s your writing comfort zone?

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

And no, I’m not talking about your ergonomic desk chair that saves your back as your fingers fly. Or your cushy, floral print chair that you curl up in to eat bon-bons as you dictate the next awesome tome to your private secretary before a private tennis lesson with a guy who looks awesome [...]

It’s Raining Books!

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck

As I said over on my blog, I’m totally down with the idea that word of mouth is the best way to, well, get the word out about anything and everything.  And so in celebration of my six winey (uh, whiney) sisters and the great reviews TAINTED is getting so far, and the fact that [...]
