Dee Davis

Dee Davis

During her formative years, Dee Davis spent half of her time dreaming of imaginary worlds and the other half of her time telling her friends the stories.  Which led to a permanent seat next to various elementary school teachers’ desks.  When she discovered that her stories could also be committed to paper, it saved a lot of time and basically kept her out of trouble.

Despite life’s ups and downs, basic nature changes very little.  And today, Dee still spends quite a bit of time talking and she has missed more than one exit driving while dreaming up stories.  One day with a rather large birthday looming, she decided that just talking about writing a romance was never going to get the job done. So she set out to write a novel. Her highly acclaimed first novel was published in July 2000, and she’s never looked back.   To date, she’s the award winning author of eighteen novels, and is constantly pinching herself to make sure all of this is really happening.

In her everyday life, which rarely includes bon-bons or tiaras, Dee is married to her real life hero (which, honest to God, she’d begun to believe was never going to show up).  The marriage has produced twenty years of adventure and the most wonderful daughter in the world.  Recently when facing ANOTHER big birthday (sigh) she learned that she was actually an adopted whine sister, which made total sense when one considers her adoration for wine.  Originally from the southwest, Dee and her family live in Manhattan—a kingdom all unto itself—where she continues to write and spend time with her husband, daughter, cat and Cardigan Welsh corgi.

Astrological sign: Aquarius; loyal, intellectual, and (according to her brother) spacey.

Favorite Leading Man: Clive Owen and/or Sean Connery

Favorite Comfort Food: Mac and Cheese

Christmas Bells

by Dee Davis

The cold wind blew up the busy street.  Christmas shoppers hurried home, trying to beat the quickly descending darkness.  Shop windows glittered like jewels, dressed in their Christmas finery.  Everything was the same.  Everything was different. Vienna at Christmas is like a fairy tale.  Gluh Wein, Kristkindl Markts, candles and somebody called Krampus.  And there’s [...]

The Tale of the Christmas Trout

by Dee Davis

In yesterday’s blog, CateS mentioned the game Dirty Santa.  I hadn’t ever heard it called that before, but I’ve played it several times at holiday parties.   You know the one where you can choose a wrapped gift or take one of the opened ones someone else has already chosen.   The year I remember it best, [...]

Saturday Books: Back to the fifteenth century…

by Dee Davis

My journey to become an author reads like a Cinderella story.  But that doesn’t mean there weren’t road bumps along the way.  It all started when, a little over ten years ago, I found myself at loose ends.  We’d just moved back to Texas from Austria, my daughter was going off to kindergarten and my [...]

Laziness in extreme flannel

by Dee Davis

So I’m up really late the other night working on various things.  And in the process came across a commercial (embedded below) for the forever lazy.  And the actual first thought I had, channeled Seth and Amy:  “Really????” Anyway, then I got the giggles, picturing myself in the grocery store or at the football game [...]

Life with a Cat

by Dee Davis

Just finished emptying the litter box (the entire thing) and learned some lessons:   1)     A small grocery bag isn’t big enough to dump litter in 2)   A small grocery bag isn’t strong enough to dump litter in 3)   A little hole in a bag can spread [...]

Tis the Season

by Dee Davis

I realize that clearly I’m in the minority but I saw this cartoon on Facebook and felt the turkey’s pain.  What the heck is the hurry?  Christmas is a beautiful season.  My favorite actually.  But as Elmo found out (what can I say we had to watch it a lot once upon a time) Christmas [...]

Collinsport Maine is back!

by Dee Davis

So we’ve already established that I am a Tim Burton fan.  Even went to see the MoMa exhibit last year of his work, which was twistedly lovely.  And two of his movies rank at the top of my all-time favorites list.   Alice In Wonderland and Big Fish (which interestingly is coming to Broadway as a [...]

My First Venture

by Dee Davis

So I’ve just had my first venture in to the world of re-releasing backlist.  My holiday romantic suspense novella, Still of the Night (orginally in the Anthology Silent Night), is now available for download on both Smashwords and Amazon.com.  It should be available on Barnes and Noble and iBooks shortly.  It’s definitely a brave new [...]

And since we were talking about breakfast, and favorite breakfast haunts, on Friday–thought I’d share a favorite recipe from the Magnolia in Austin! Gingerbread Pancakes   Ingredients 3 eggs 1/4 cup brown sugar  (might want to kick up the sugar a little if you don’t use syrup) 1 ¼  cup buttermilk   (can substitute ¼ molasses [...]

Twenty-four Hours a Day!

by Dee Davis

So my favorite meal of the day is breakfast!  And given a choice I’ll choose it for any meal.  One of my favorite things about living in Manhattan is the prevalence of diners which serve breakfast twenty-four hours a day.  The Madison (on 1st Ave at 53rd) is my favorite and even having moved slightly [...]

One Voice

by Dee Davis

“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.”  –Alice Walker.   I just wanted to share with you a video my daughter shared with me.   Women make up fifty-one percent of the people in the United States, and yet consistently the media chooses to misrepresent us. [...]

Goodbye Pine Valley!

by Dee Davis

Okay, so I’ll admit that I’ve been hooked on ABC soaps for more than thirty years.  And although I was right there on the front row for Luke and Laura’s wedding (when I was in grad school), my heart has always belonged to All My Children. I remember Erica when she didn’t have any married [...]

Closing Time

by Dee Davis

Just back from a fabulous trip to Albuquerque and Sante Fe to first see my mother and then to hang with Julie K. Almost got ourselves in a pickle though on our first day in Sante Fe. We were too early to check in at Bishop’s Lodge, so we headed into town for a little [...]

Sometimes it’s better in Print

by Dee Davis

One of the downsides to e-publishing books in that format only, is that people who don’t have e-readers (or don’t want them) don’t have access to a book.  So for all of you folks who wanted to read Daring, but aren’t into the e-scene yet, I’ve got good news.  The wonderful folks over at Grand [...]

To Much Reality?

by Dee Davis

So here’s a question for all of you who watch reality shows (me included)…can a show go too far?   I’m asking the question because of the news that Taylor Armstrong’s husband, Russell committed suicide.  Now I don’t watch the Real Housewives series, but I do watch the news and of course was shocked, and weirdly [...]

It’s All in the Place

by Dee Davis

When I read, one of the most important things to me about the novel is the setting.  When I escape I like to go places I haven’t been.  Whether it’s somewhere far away or somewhere created by an author’s imagination, part of the reading journey for me is all about the place.   Whether it’s Tolkien’s [...]

Life Living on a Runway—well sort of…

by Dee Davis

When it rains it pours.  Or in my case when the pipes back up.  Our building was built in 1948 (and supposedly JD Salinger once lived here.)  Buildings that old have a certain charm.  And a lot of quirks.  Most of them the kind you laugh and shake your head over.   But just over a [...]

The Best Things Happen When You Least Expect

by Dee Davis

Sometimes the world reminds us just how wonderful people really are. As most of you know, I recently attending the Rom Con, a fabulous readers convention held in Denver.  It was my first time to attend and I had no idea what to expect.   What I found was a hotel full of lovely ladies all [...]

Green Thumb on a Hot Summer Day

by Dee Davis

Since we’ve all been talking about our summer gardens, I thought I’d share a few pictures of mine.  The tomatoes are still growing and green, but hey, we’ve got tomatoes.  And the peppers are sweet with just a hint of spice. We cut the first two up to use in shrimp fried rice—one of my husband’s [...]
