Far From Home

by Sherri Browning Erwin on November 1, 2012

Let’s not dwell on that awful Hurricane Sandy that trapped me in Florida for longer than intended, but fortunately caused no serious damage to my family or house. And I’m praying for those that were not as fortunate. So sad to see the destruction and loss.

Instead, let me tell you about what I did while I was away. I wrote. Yes, that I did. And it takes discipline (major!) to work when you’re so close to your favorite place, Disney World. There were days that I actually left parks to go back to my room and write. And even though I didn’t get as much done as I wanted (exhaustion!), I did manage to put in some time with the manuscript. Which, to my way of thinking, earned me this little treat:

The King Cupcake.

I stayed at a place called Pop Century, one of Disney’s value resorts (which, considering Disney prices, honestly is a good value), a resort that celebrates pop culture through the 50s-90s. I was in the 50s building, so… bowling pin staircases, a giant jukebox next to the bowling pin pool, enormous Lady and the Tramp statues at either end of the pool area (Lady and the Tramp, released in 1955). And in the resort’s food court bakery, a cupcake dedicated to Elvis Presley.

This little beauty had moist and delicious chocolate cake, banana custard filling, peanut butter frosting, a chocolate drizzle, and… BACON! Crispy candied diced bacon sprinkled over the top. Over the top indeed! This cupcake was amazing. I’m still dreaming of it.

And because I believe in treating myself for work well done (a little too self-indulgent, I am), I also tried the tie-dyed cheesecake. It’s cheesecake with all these fabulous colors on a red velvet cake base. Yes!

And besides indulging in delectable treats ( I also visited the World Showcase Food and Wine Festival), I met some amazing people and made some new friends. Hopefully new friends who will run out and buy all my books, but hey- I will love them even if they don’t. I was at Disney World for the 15th anniversary party of a group called INTERCOT. If you love Disney, or even just need a little Disney trip advice, pop on by and we’ll help you out over there. I’m known as SBETigg in INTERCOT circles. Oh, I’ve revealed my secret identity. Yes, it’s true, my Disney geekdom really runs that deep.

Strawberry-lime margarita, shrimp taco.

Do you have any secret identities? If you had to pick a resort building based on a decade, which would you choose? Love bacon? Think it belongs on a cupcake? Or would you rather have that cheesecake? What’s your favorite indulgence?

Over the years of many dance exhibitions, I’ve stayed at the “value” resorts a number of times, as well as several of the others. Detail in the fantasy is always first-rate. The kids even had a tea party at the Grand Floridian years ago.

As for eras, I’m a big fan of The Tudors, so that time period could be fun. Castles, elaborate clothes, jousts, jewels…ah, crazy Henry who executed rather than divorced…

Maybe not so Disneyesque.

On second thought, I’m going with the 20′s like Dee. Isn’t there a new Gatsby movie coming out? Just redecorate a wing of the Grand Floridian!

I did a tea party at the Grand Flo this time, too. It’s my Disney home, where I usually stay. I honeymooned there 22 years ago.

Roaring 20s could be fun. We could fill the bathtub with gin!

Well, I should have known if there’s a secret Disney organization you’d be a charter member. I’m still holding out for our trip and behind the scenes tour! Made to Atlanta safe and sound. So air in NY is up and running again –sort of.

Bacon on a cupcake–hmmmm… might try it… but not sure I’d like it. Anyway you lost me at banana… however, the cheesecake sounds mighty tasty! YUM. And since I’m celebrating finishing a book… maybe they have cheesecake in Atlanta. Hey Jacquie waving at you from downtown…

I didn’t know you were coming to Atlanta! How long are you here for??

Sherri –

I secret Disney organization and secret meetings — sounds interesting!

As you know I am a Disney geek, but clearly not to your level – though my son and daughter-in-law would give you a run-for-your-money!

I’ll be there in January for a business meeting…. can’t wait…

I don’t know, Terri, you go more than I do. I think you might be right up there in the geekosphere.

We were at Disney World in February and camped at Fort Wilderness. I would stay in the 50′s complex just for the music of that era. Bacon sounds good on anything.

Fort Wilderness always looks so fun! Especially at Christmas, when campers go all out with decorations.

I love, love, love bacon.

It does not belong on cupcakes.

word.

It was really, really good. I’m not sure there’s any place bacon can’t make itself a welcome addition.

and candied bacon is rather awesome.. which I’m assuming it was?

Yes, candied bacon. Yes, delicious.

I agree…. LOVE bacon but definitely not on cupcakes… I like my savory/spicy/salty things over here and my sweets over there…. and never the twain shall meet…LOL!

So chocolate covered pretzels, also a no? I love to mix it up. When I go to the movies with my kid sister, we put M & Ms in our popcorn.

My resort decade would be the 80′s– love the music, the memories. So much fun! Although I think the 50′s would be fun, too–just so happens I have a poodle skirt and saddle shoes. Not too many places I can wear thoses, LOL!
Oh, that cupcake, Sherri! I LOVE cupcakes! I LOVE cheesecake! So any resort that serves those, I’m in. If there was the Cupcake Resort, I’d go there. Never thought of bacon on a cupcake but I would definitely try it.

The 80s building has huge Rubik’s cube staircases, really fun. And there are dance parties every day by the hippy dippy pool (in the 60s area).

If you ever go to Disney, let me know. I have a cupcake crawl map. It lists all the cupcakes at WDW and where to get them. I think you would definitely be making a trip to the Wilderness Lodge for the Smores Cupcake.

We stayed at the same kind of resort but ours had 101 Dalmations. Great price. Loved it.
I was kNatia at one time…back when I was with a Klingon group but I found I was not Klingon enough…I am much more Orion than Klingon. (Leave you to ponder that). Before that I was part of a local Star Trek group that did quite a lot of charity work and donated it all to the local bird lady who took in injured seabirds (actually any bird but mainly seabirds). We had so much fun and did go to a lot of ST conventions together. I was sometimes the only chic with all those men but they were like brothers.
And if I had to pick a resort based on a decade it would be my favourite, the 80′s. Previous employment working with so many much elderly people who lived during the WWII and doing reminiscence with them has made me marvel how with rationing anyone could survive. They had so much less than us, and then rationing came along and they had even less and yet these people came out stronger, smarter and better equipped to handle lifes marvels better than we can today. But I would not want to live back in those times lol.
Bacon, candied and salty, sounds divine on cakes candies and ice cream.
I am jealous…you seemed to have had a brilliant time. I may need to look into this INTERCOT. I have Disney tickets from when I was little for the rides. They long ago stopped ticketing per ride. But they are safely tucked away in a special place at my moms. xxx

Ti, that would be Disney’s All Star Movies resort. Also fun. I knew you would have a secret identity! Didn’t know it would be Klingon. :)
