TEA TIME, CHEERIO!

by Jacquie D'Alessandro on September 24, 2012

In honor of Whiners Dee and Julia being in jolly old England, I thought I’d share my recent adventures at a local tea house! Four times a year the ladies in my neighborhood get together for our quarterly Ladies Lunch. It’s always a good time, but last week’s luncheon was especially fun. It was held at a tea house and we had a blast. Now, usually a sedate tea house wouldn’t make one think of having a blast, but this is a very special tea house. One of the owners is a hat maker, so there are dozens of gorgeous hats decorating the beautifully appointed space. And the best part is you can wear them while taking tea! There were forty of us, and we all wore a hat, sipped tea (black current flavor–YUM!), nibbled on perfect finger sandwiches, scones, and the lightest, most delicious desserts ever (cream puff, anyone?). We laughed and clinked cups and had a grand old time. Here’s me and one of my neighbors wearing our elegant hats.

Cheerio, dahling!

Have you ever been to a tea house? Tell us about it! If not, what did you do this weekend? I hope you had a great one!

We have Teaz Me! here in Chico, but it’s more a cafe that has teas than a *tea house.* I’m very boring in my tea preferences. Red Rose is my go-to brand, although I have tried the Yorkshire Gold and it’s very good. I do not like fruit-flavored teas. They are just wrong!
Glad the travelling Whiners made it home. Can’t wait to hear trip details.

I like Yorkshire Gold as well. My favorite go-to tea is Earl Grey. The BEST tea I ever tasted was a Jasmine/Mandarin Orange at high tea at the Ritz Carlton in Atlanta. Delish!

Funny. When someone here (in England) mentions tea, it means dinner! I have seen oh maybe about 3 proper tea houses since moving here. Though tea is very popular to drink, going to a tea house seems something that people that move in certain circles do. In London. Or at a National Trust tearoom. Very rare to find here. But then so is mead. I thought you would find mead everywhere. Nope! Very rare! I have seen more mead in the US than here!
Oh and as for tea…I love certain brands. For years I was a Twinings fan until I saw what they did to their employees. (Long story short they fired all of them to move production to Poland because it was cheaper). So I refuse to buy Twinings anymore. Which meant I had to expand my horizons and try new brands. PGTips are nice. I think my favourite so far is Yorkshire Gold Tea. There are others, which by no means are bad. Just, differently flavoured.

That’s horrible about Twinings, Ti. I had no idea.

Yes, didn’t know that about Twinings. Bad on them!

So on your scone…was it cream then jam or jam then cream?

I didn’t know there was a right or wrong order. I’ve always done cream then jam. Is that a faux pas?

Your hats are a lot better than mine and Dee’s. We have lots and lots of tea. I was happy to wake up to my Kuerig machine this morning. :-)

I am always amazed at the hats they wear here for weddings. And every other event.

Ah, I need to find a local teahouse, with hats! That sounds amazing. When we were kids, my grandmother would bring us to her favorite tea house. Always a good time.

It was called a tea room, actually. And I cried once when Grandma wanted to take us there, and then ended up loving it but wouldn’t confess as much because I was embarrassed over the tantrum. I was just a wee one, but I remember it well.

And you will always remember that too! I remember going to the Ho Jo restaurant (Howard Johnsons) for icecream with my gran. She was the night auditor. Everytime I have pistachio I remember HoJo’s!
