Cardboard Boat Regatta!

by Jacquie D'Alessandro on August 16, 2012

There’s always something fun going on in my neighborhood! Our latest adventure was a new-to-me activity–a cardboard boat regatta. A group of men got together and made this AMAZING boat out of nothing but cardboard (per the rules you can also use duct tape and putty to secure the seams and paint–but that’s it).

The Lady Firebirds with the Blue Phoenix boat

Is that a cool looking boat or what?!

We launched the boat at the lake and me, along with 5 other lady rowers plus one helmswoman rowed that sucker to a first place finish! YAY to the Lady Firebirds! Plus the event raised about a thousand dollars for the local fire departmen–even better! Plus there was a pot luck dinner–don’t get much better than that!

Rowing to victory!

What fun things have you been up to this summer?

Fun ideal & wonderful fundraiser! Did the boat sink once you got to the finish line? Did they use a certain kinda of cardboard because most falls apart once water gets on/into it.

Hi Michelle! No, the boat didn’t sink and we’re planning to use it next year. It’s really well made (there were engineers on the committee :) ). One of the families in our neighborhood owns a furniture store so they have access to a lot of heavy-duty cardboard and that’s what they used. You would never know it wasn’t made of wood! I think that boat could make a transatlantic crossing, LOL! (I, um, wouldn’t be volunteering to row it that far, btw :)

Your neighborhood is awesome. This is so cool! Gorgeous boat, and yay for the Lady Firebirds! The coolest thing I’ve done all summer is… not killed my dad or his dog? I think that’s pretty cool considering Diego (dad’s dog) got into it with skunks on three separate occasions.

How fun!!!!
My summer has been sleep. Work. Sleep. Work.
BUT we are looking at Saturday going to the Sherwood Forest to see the Robin Hood Festival.

And I entered my family to win a chance to be King Queen and Princess at Kennilworth Castle for a day.
Oh and I have also applied for many jobs. Including working in a castle at their museum.

Thanks, Laura! Doesn’t the boat look great? They worked so hard on it. And the paint job is amazing–a very talented and dedicated group. It was an honor to row it. And let me tell, we rowed the HELL out of that boat! We rowed that sucker like there was gold medal on the line.
