I need a another TV obsession like I need a hole in the head. I already watch too much. And a new show (especially one where I haven’t seen any of the OLD shows) is very dangerous for me. But all that aside, I got sucked in anyway…
So what is this new to me show? Breaking Bad? The Wire? True Blood? Nope… despite my love of all things dramatic, none of those stellar shows appeal to me in the slightest. My newest obsession is…CHOPPED. The cooking wars on Food Network. Basically four chefs (quite often famous ones from the network) face off over three rounds. Appetizer, entrée and desert. The twist is that they must work using the ingredients uncovered in each round’s basket.
For instance things like tripe and prickly pear cactus or strawberry leather (fruit roll-ups for those of us not limited to using non-product names). And that’s for a desert. It’s really wild. And I’ve learned a lot about some foods I’d never even heard of; like, Umeboshi (pickled plums from Japan), Pepitas (pumpkin seeds), Jaggery (unrefined sugar in a cone shape), Ramp (wild leek), Pomelo (citrus fruit from Southeast Asia).
The four chefs start out with the appetizer basket. They must combine the mandatory ingredients (usually between three and four) and compliment them with
things taken from the Chopped pantry (which is pretty very well appointed). The only pre-prepared things are a large pot of boiling water and an oven heated to 500 degrees. Other than that, they’re on their own with a very short twenty minute cooking time.
Once the dishes are complete and plated (which isn’t as easy as it seems), the chefs present them to a rotating panel of judges including Alex Guarnaschelli, Amanda Freitag, Aaron Sanchez, Marcus Samuelson and Marc Murphy. Ted Allen is the host. The judges comment with an amusing soundtrack highlighting the bad and then vote on which chef will be “Chopped” from the round.
The remaining three chefs then move to the entrée round. With only a little more time, they open a new basket and proceed until again one of them is “chopped”, leaving two to face-off for the desert round and the prize of $10,000. Needless to say these are some really creative people. And it’s great fun to see how they combine ingredients you’d never expect to see together in new and exciting ways. It’s equally fun, I’ll admit, to see them fail.
But unlike a lot of reality TV, their failure isn’t anything to be ashamed of. Just luck of the draw ingredient-wise. Recently on Chopped Grilled (the newest episodes) one of the ingredients was green plantains. Apparently, in order to peel them and get them soft enough to be edible, you must first boil them and then prepare them. Only one of the chefs in the round was familiar with plantains (and for him only because he’d seen it on another episode of Chopped) so the others treated them like bananas. A mistake since eating them without proper cooking can cause some serious indigestion.
All in all, if you’ve got an evening to spare—I’d highly recommend watching an episode or two—or three. It really is addictive. Gochujang* anyone?
Do you watched Chopped? What is your favorite cooking show? Have you used some wild and crazy ingredients in your cooking?

I watched the Grillmasters version a couple of weeks ago when they were trying to cook/grill in very windy conditions. And the judges complained about one of the dishes being bland! The chef explained the seasoning blew off in the wind. LOL.
My favorite cooking show is anything with Julia Child. She really started the whole genre. Then Alton Brown is a fave as well. The best part of watching all these shows is getting new ideas.
Love Alton Brown. Have two of his cookbooks. And yes, spices blowing off was funny!
Absolutely LOVE chopped! Can’t imagine how they make such incredible stuff in so short a time! Can’t wait to see the Grill Master finale!
Me too!!!
We LOVE Chopped! Been watching it since it came on the air. Love the Grill Masters series they’re doing now. The guy who won last week–the cowboy who didn’t know how to cook the plantains–was my favorite! He was hysterical. I think his name was Kent?
I just love everything about the show–the fact that the DH loves it as well, Ted Allen, the judges, the weird foods we’ve never heard of, and the creativity is amazing! I could never do that–make something out of all those unrelated ingredients and in such a short time frame.
Love lots of those Food Network shows–Barefoot Contessa, and our fave–Sandwich King with Jeff Mauro, which I’ve blogged about in the past. He’s fabulous!
Kent was my fav too… and now it’s between him and the dude from Hawaii. I loved the cowgirl who wanted to get married also. Wish she’d won because she and Kent would have been a hoot to watch together!! I’ll have to watch Sandwich King. Cupcake wars rocks too!
Dee, I love regional cook books too!!! I have some from all over! Those are the best ones! It is neat and interesting to see the changes that different areas will make to certain dishes….
And to be able to understand the differences between say the fabulous cornbread in Boston, Atlanta and San Antonio. Totally different for all three but equally delicious!
It just amazes me what some of the chefs on Chopped come up with!!! I look at some of the ingredients they’ve had and am like; ‘what in the hell is that?!’…LOL!!! I’ve watched it since it started a few years ago, but I still love to watch the repeats….One of my very favorite episodes was the one where the viewers decided what was in the baskets…I would be soooo screwed! LOL!!!!
I haven’t seen that one yet. I am still glomming the back episodes. It’s so fun.
Some of my favorites are when you get these tough guys who think they are all that and then a woman chef takes them down!
Whoever thought of this show was a genius!!! I think too, they have now won an Emmy…
Oh, fun! I love cooking shows. Will have to check this one out!
It really is fun. And crazy with all the weird ingredients.
I have watched this show and it amazes me what these chefs can come up with such bizzare ingredients.. I won’t say I am addicted to it, but I do enjoy watching it.. I love shows like Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives with Guy Fieri.. I also love Iron Chef America… Bobby Flay is one of my all time fav Chefs… I do not ever try anything that these chefs cook, why because I am really not a “cooking” person. I like to have food prepared for me, rather than cook it myself… But I do like to find out where the best places to eat are…So that’s why I watch these shows..
Almost had dinner at his restaurant Mesa last week– but switched our plans and went to Megu (Japanese) instead. It was fabulous by the way! Definitely try it if you’re in NYC. Will still try to do Flay’s restaurant one of these days.
Forgot to say love Diners and Drive-ins too!
In November I get to eat at one of his (Bobby Flay) burger places at Mohegan Sun in CT…can’t wait!!
That’ll be great fun. Report back!
I will!!! My mom got to meet him when they opened it and sent me pics…sooo jealous! She said that he was really nice and took the time to pose with everyone who asked….LOL!!! I would love to eat at Bar American too, but that one is a little pricey..so we’ll settle on burgers! LOL! My mom got me his burger cookbook and of course I can’t look at it without my mouth watering….
Also, the host? Ted Allen. Love him! And I think it would be great fun to hang out with all the chef judges. They’re almost as cool as the Whine Sisters.
Love Ted Allen. If I could have dinner with him and Alton Brown I’d be in heaven. Oh and throw in Ina Garten for good measure
Now I’m trying to think of the craziest ingredients I’ve ever used and I can’t come up with any, but there have been some doozies.
I know I think I must have blocked them from my mind. Because I can remember thinking “now what?” many times when trying to make some complicated recipe or another.
I’m so addicted to Chopped right now! Love it. Cooking shows, love! But when they make it competitive, love even more. I always love to see what ingredients they’re going to get, and then what they do with them. And I always have a chef that I love from the start, and sometimes one that I want to go home right away. But sometimes I love them all. It’s a great show. I also love Hell’s Kitchen and Master Chef. I love Master Chef a bit more. And Hotel Hell debuted last night. The concept scares me a little, but I started watching and I was riveted.
We also watch Restaurant Impossible. And Iron Chef. And I love Top Chef on Bravo. Haven’t watched Hell’s Kitchen but I know that everyone seems to love it. Also want to watch Anne ?’s show. The one that was a sous chef on Iron Chef. Saw her on chopped and really liked her style.
Forgot Cupcake Wars… It’s addictive too.
Oh yeah, LOVE Top Chef too!! Did you watch Around The World In 80 Plates that was on Bravo? Loved that show too! They went from country to country…it was crazy!!! And of course, love watching Curtis Stone any chance I get…hehe…
Oh that sounds like a great show!
Sometimes my hubby will watch Iron Chef and then he gets inspired, which is like once in a blue moon…but some of the things he’s made have actually turned out pretty decent! I love to watch the Japanese version of Iron Chef and the translator….too funny…especially the reactions of the Japanese judges…makes me giggle….
I have never heard of Chopped but I do hope it appears here in the UK. Right now I am addicted to Hell’s Kitchen. My husband and I both really enjoy yelling at the tv at the chefs we dislike. I feel like a mini Gordon at times watching the show.
I love cooking shows. Jamie Oliver had a brilliant series where he travelled around the globe showing the different types of local cooking. My favourite was in Greece where he cooked on a rooftop over looking the Parthenon. I do not know what the thing he was using to cook on is but I want one! I cannot find them here so I am going to need to try some Arabic type cooking places and see if they have one as there are not many Greek grocers here.
I love Cuban food. When I lived in the Keys, I learned many different types of cooking. And I am learning even more here in England. My husband loves my Southern/Tex-Mex/Jamaican/Cuban/Puerto Rican/English/and of course Caribbean cooking styles.
I collect regional cookbooks. I have some from different parts of the UK and also some older ones as well. But of all the cookbooks I have, my favourite is one from the church most of my family belongs to in NC countryside. I am related to almost every person that contributed, and the most precious is the biscuit recipe from my beloved Great Grandma. My daughter has already told me she cannot wait to ‘inherit’ the book.
I love regional cookbooks! Often when I travel I try to bring home something that has recipes for the food I had while there!
