While You are Reading This

by Julia London on August 8, 2012

I will be hiking.  Or sitting on the deck in lovely 70-degree weather working on my book.  Or popping into town for some coffee.  I am what I like to call a “working vacation.”  Which means I picked up my computer and moved out of the heat to work some place it feels like a vacation.  So you will excuse me if I am incommunicado for a couple of weeks.

I packed carefully for this trip.  But I still forgot:  Money (kind of important), lotion (extremely important in mountain air), T-shirts (what was I thinking?  I wear them EVERY DAY.  How could I forget them?) and the book I was reading.  Which was paper.  Which reminds me once again why I love my kindle.

I used to be so good at packing.  Now I can’t seem to remember even the most basic things.  But I have plenty of running clothes, By God.  I guess I thought I’d be running two or three races a day.

What kind of packer are you?  Do you toss things in, or do you go about it methodically, with a list?

None of you will be surprised to hear that I’m a list maker. And I start separating out the clothes I want to take a few days early so that I know they’re clean and ready to go. I am just a little too organized I fear.

I am a terrible packer. I usually don’t forget stuff, but I don’t do lists and I kind of just shove it all in the bag without organization. Which shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows me. Organization is not my thing. I’m pretty sure that I had servants to do all that for me in another life.

You really forgot a few basics there, Julia, LOL!
I’m a good packer. On our recent 12 day excursion to Italy we each only brought one carry-on bag. No checked bags. We traveled between cities by train and didn’t want to be lugging heavy bags. It worked perfectly.

I am lucky, most of the time my husband packs for me. He is an airline pilot and can pack much better then me. I am amazed how many things he can fit in one suitcase. I just lay out what I need and he packs it away!

If we are traveling by 5th wheel, there is no problem since our clothes are always in it. This includes matching t-shirts. If we get lost from each other, we always know what the other is wearing. When we were cruising, we always make sure we have just enough clothes for the trip and that the suitcase is withing weight limits. That isn’t easy. Since everything cost more on a ship, it doesn’t pay to forget anything. My husband always packs two weeks early. I’m more the wait until the cruise is almost here to pack.

My husband thinks I am a bit of a lunatic. I write a list of what we are doing, possible temps, and then things we need from deo to undies per person. I also list the seperate items we bring like books and headphones. But if I do not do this, I forget something important.
Hubby packs like an hour before the flight. No lists. Just grabs and go’s.
