Olympics!

by Sherri Browning Erwin on August 3, 2012

We’re taking it easier for the rest of the summer. Friday will be our day to ask you a simple question. We look forward to hearing your answers. Today’s question:

The Olympics: Are you watching? What has been your favorite Olympic moment so far?

I am a bit torn. I am sick unto death of hearing about the Olympics… yet find myself watching once in a blue at what is going on. I think the Chinese girls Badminton team did so bad to show the world how horrible the Chinese treat children in training. The pictures of the tiny little girl crying as the man is standing on her legs forcing them backwards is digusting. But this is why they dominate in so many catagories. The super intensive training.
Who ever gets gold is fine with me…as long as it was done fairly and everyone had fun. Though I pity the Americans who have to pay so much in taxes for their medals.

Well, Ti, you have probably been hearing about it for much longer than most of us, so we can’t blame you.

My family and I have been watching. I don’t have one specific favorite moment but love to watch the faces of our US athletes when they realize they’ve won a medal.

That’s got to be my favorite part as well. The pure joy! All that hard work and an amazing pay off.

I loved watching the US women win team gold in gymnastics. But then I also loved watching Gabby Douglas win. And then, watching Phelps beat Lochte last night was pretty great, too. So many great moments! Hard to choose. Oh, I also love watching Misty May Trainer and Kerry Walsh Jennings.

Okay I’m clearly watching more than I thought because I saw Phelps beat Lochte las night too!

I hate to confess that I haven’t really watched much at all. I love the winter olympics but not so much the summer ones. That said, I’ve watched a little of the swimming (I’m always amazed at how fast they are and how close the finishes are). And some gymnastics.

Wow, I’m addicted. I’m watching things I never thought I would get into, like archery. It’s all so fascinating to me.

Well, this year it’s usually opposite a baseball game, so I’m not even conflicted about what to watch. But I do know what you mean. It is addictive. I remember watching the two women in the volley ball event last time. Sand Volley ball? Was totally captivated. So I do get it. Just not this year.

Beach volley ball. Even when there’s no actual beach.

I’ve loved all of it but was especially into the synchronized diving. I was mesmerized! Amazing that ONE person can do such intricate dives, but to have TWO people doing them and looking like a mirror–very cool.

The diving, wow! I know! And those suits are so tiny. I mean, sorry, those dives are so amazing, and synchronized, yes. How do they do that? Have you seen the men’s water polo team? I saw them in their caps and laughed, and then I saw them without caps out of the pool and my jaw dropped.

The gymnastics…. mostly because I sorta understand how they are scored.. but then there’s men in little speedos…. I only hope that Lochte’s mom shows a little more discretion on her son’s sex life… I mean if you can gross out Dr. Ruth [yes, still alive & kicking!].. seriously… hooking up with him.. I’d ask for proof of ‘clean living’ and it would have to be dated within the last hour…

LOL, Cate–I was thinking that same thing about Ryan’s mom–TMI. It REALLY would have sufficed for her to simply say that he doesn’t have time for a relationship. And really, did anyone think he did? He must spend at least 12 hours a day training–not much time for a relationship there.

When the games started, I was tired of Phelps and cheering on Lochte. And then I read an article on Lochte and felt ashamed, wow, what a frat boy jerk. And then I saw a behind-the-scenes clip with Phelps training with Allison Schmidt and I’m a big Phelps fan again. They were too cute together. Plus, his mom. How can you not love watching his mom watch him?

Oh haha, his Mom is taking it back today. I meant dates, she said, innocent dates not hook-ups. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone by not being able to commit. Yeah, sure, Lochte’s Mom.

I think we all know what one-night stands are (and that really isn’t the same as saying “date” is it?). Lochte’s catch-phrase is “jeah.” Yeah with a J. And he didn’t even make it up himself, he borrowed it from rapper Lil Wayne. So, jeah, Lochte. I think we know what your mom was saying.
