More Classic TV

by Jacquie D'Alessandro on July 13, 2012

Julie’s blog yesterday about Scooby Doo got me thinking about tv shows I loved as a kid.  There were a lot of them that I really enjoyed that I haven’t seen in years.  One of my faves was Lost in Space.  Danger, Will Robinson, danger! I never got into Star Trek, but I never missed Lost in Space.  Go figure.

Danger, Will Robinson, danger!

Another childhood favorite was The Flintstones. Flintstones, meet the Flintstones–they’re the modern stone-age family! I loved watching Fred, Wilma, Betty, Barney, Pebbles, Bamm-bamm and Dino.  I loved the clever way they turned everything that was modern into the stone age equivalent. Yaba Daba Doo!

Along those same lines, I loved the Jetsons. I wanted my family to get a robot maid like Rosie and a dog like Astro.  And I wanted Judy Jetson’s hair.  Needless to say, none of that worked out.

I also loved Bugs Bunny and all the Looney Toons gang.  And then there was Mr. Ed (a horse is a horse, of course, of course!) and My Favorite Martian, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and I Love Lucy (remember the Vitameatavegamin episode?).  And let’s not forget Creature Feature, the Monkees, and the Partridge Family. And please tell me I’m not the only one who watched the Jack LaLanne show! Me and my mom watched that all the time.

Wow–it seems as if all I did was watch tv when I was a kid, LOL!  What tv shows did you watch growing up? What were your favorite episodes from those shows?

I had a crush on I think his name was Michael from Land of the Lost. Banana Splits and Monkeys were great. I also loved Hanna Barbara’s Wacky Races and The Smurfs. Oh and who can forget Krofft Superstars and Hong Kong Phooey. Josey and the Pussy Cats. Grape Ape. Jabber Jaw. Family Affair. Oh and all the shows I listed yesterday.
And of course, Star Trek.

Wesley Eure played Will Marshall, the son/older brother on Land of the Lost. Loved that show, too!

I never saw Land of the Lost. And I’ve never seen a Star Trek episode. But I loved Josie and the Pussycats :)

Jacquie, I loved all those shows, too! Except for the martian one and Mr. Ed. They were not on in syndication in my area. But, I was a weird kid. I woke up every day at 6 a.m. just to do jumping jacks with Jack LaLanne. And then some hippy yoga lady came on after him, and I did that, too. I started out so promising! And then I started school and gym class came along and ruined me because I wasn’t coordinated and got made fun of for it and never wanted to be active again, until my older years. A shame!

I was the same way in gym class, Sherri–always the last one to be picked. But hey–we turned out okay :) xox

Oh, I loved all of those!!! And, yes, I also loved Charlie’s Angels (I was a bit older then). My friends and I would be the angels. I always had to be Kate, even though I wanted to be Kelly!!

My friends and I would be the angels, too. My two friends always fought over being Sabrina or Kelly, but I was automatically always Jill. The blonde one.

I wanted Jill’s hair SOOOO bad! And I wanted to look like Kelly.
Yeah–none of that went particularly well. Bummer.

Lost in Space (especially the first two years which I own on DVD) is my favorite blast from the past. When I was in trouble, they way they punished me was to send me to my room without Lost in Space. I actually remember sitting in the doorway of my room once trying to listen to the show. Loved the Jetsons too. Although my fav cartoon was Johnny Quest. (Scarily he was also my first crush). And Petticoat Junction was fabulous –can still sing the song.

Oh, Johnny Quest! I loved him! Yes–definitely a bit of a crush going on there, LOL!

Didn’t watch Lost in Space, again that one wasn’t on in my area. But I did love Johnny Quest. And Hadji and Bandit. Wasn’t one of the older guys named Race? That’s a cool hero name, actually. Surprised we haven’t seen more of that.

LauraR July 13, 2012 at 10:00 am

Yes, Race was Johnny’s bodyguard, I think.

Okay, one of us has to write a hero named Race. Takers?

This brings back so many wonderful memories. Some of my favorite childhood shows were HR Puff-n-Stuff, The Bugaloos, Magilla Gorilla, Sigmond and The Sea Monster.

Magilla Gorilla! Take him, buy him, take him home and try him–gorilla for sale!
Which reminds me–I also liked Mighty Mouse and Speed Racer.

Ah, Pufnstuff. That name wasn’t too obviously out there, was it? My first crush was on Jimmy from Pufnstuf. Jack Wilde. Also great in Oliver. And now deceased, sadly, alcohol problems.

Yes, I remember that he died. Very sad. He was the perfect Artful Dodger.

Lots of familiar TV shows! I loved Petticoat Junction but thought it grossly unfair that they brought back the popularity of “Jo” names after I had emphatically renounced mine. ;-)

Loved Bonanza and Wild Wild West, both of which were popular during my teen years when I was of an age to fully “appreciate” the attributes of the lead characters. (grin)

My childhood (pre-teen) years were at a time when television shows were limited. Our antenna brought in four stations (one more came with the rabbit ears) on our black and white TV. Creature Features and Shock Theater were staples of Friday/Saturday nights when WGN stayed on the air past midnight.

I clearly remember seeing the NBC peacock and Wonderful World of Disney for the first time in color. It was quite the event! lol!

Wild Wild West–that was such a great show! Loved it too. Artemis Gordon. I remember the Wonderful World of Color (the name change and the color!)

Ah yes, the Wonderful World of Disney. I think that was on Sunday nights. Right after Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.

Yes! And right before Bonanza. Sunday nights were big in my house. :)

Four stations, yes. And I used to be my family’s remote control. Back in the days when there were no actual remotes and you had to turn the dial, Mom and Dad would expect a kid to get up and change channels. :) Which also meant fiddling with the antenna.

LOL! I think that’s why parents had so many kids back then–so there was always someone to get up and change the tv channel! And wasn’t Ed Sullivan on Sunday nights, too? And Lawrence Welk? Was there anything on during the week?!

Fresh, too funny! My brother and I watched Petticoat Junction. His favorite was Uncle Joe. Mine changed every week.

Jacquie, I loved, loved, loved the Flintstones. It’s so funny you bring them up, because now they are claymation on kid channels, and i was telling two little ones just last night that I had a Dino when I was little. And then I started thinking how long the Flintstones have been around, and then…wow. I had another glass of wine.

I loved the Jetson’s, too, and yes, we watched Jack LaLane! Do you know that only recently died?

We also had the local kid programming. Remember those? You could go down to the station? I got to go to the Toogie Tuckness show for my birthday one year and I remember I got an enormous Tootsie Roll filled with Tootsie rolls. Sweet!

Petticoat Junction! Yes, I used to watch that all the time. Remember the 3 sisters? Betty Jo, Bobbie Jo and Something Else Jo–one was blond, one brunette and one a redhead. Anyway, remember the handsome young man who came to town and married the redhead? I always thought he was secretly in love with the hot blond sister and she with him which really bugged me!

You are making me feel old this morning. My grandfather had the first TV in the neighborhood. It was a very small screen in a very large wooden box. There was no daytime TV until the 50′s. One of my favorite shows was called The People’s Choice starring Jackie Cooper and Patricia Breslin (she later starred in General Hospital until she married Art Modell), and a talking dog named Cleo. I also liked December Bride starring Spring Byington. Harry Morgan was also in it. He later became Col. Potter on MASH. Everyone watched I Love Lucy. My favorite was when she stomped grapes in Italy.

Stomping the grapes in Italy was so funny! Definitely one of my favorites. My favorite scene from the series was when Ricky told little Ricky the bedtime story La Caperucita Roja–Little Red Riding Hood in Spanish. Soooo funny and adorable! It’s on You Tube if anyone wants to see it.

Petticoat Junction – I loved it. As a not so bright four year old who already had an ethnic nose, one night I thought “those girls are so pretty they must not have noses”. I eagerly watched the next day’s rerun to discover I was wrong. Somehow, I was smart enough to keep this silliness to myself at the time.

LOL! I wish that show was in syndication–I’d love to see it again.
