Last weekend, I was headed to the Traveler’s Golf championship in Cromwell, CT, and my dad (who is now in residence, 11 days and counting) said, “Where’s your hat?”
And I scoffed. “Dad, I’m wearing SPF 50. Plus, we have skybox tickets (which is the only way to watch golf, if you ask me– in a catered skybox, great seating, free food and booze).” Well, the sun shone right into the skybox, and I ended up sunburned. I hate it when Dad is right!
So next time, I will wear a hat. I found some pictures of hats from the Royal Ascot 2012. Help choose a style for me.
Do you love hats? Do hats suit you? Have you ever wanted to dress up and go to the races? Or golf? Would you watch golf willingly or have to be lured with the promise of free stuff and fancy seats? What are your exciting holiday plans?

I can wear hats okay. But I would feel too self conscious to walk around with giant cherries on top. Life’s not THAT good.
Cherries would look so cute on you!
My husband wears a brown beat up leather cowboy kind of hat almost everyday. My daughter can wear almost any style of hat and look good. But then when I try on a hat it just looks wrong. The only thing I can find that is ‘ok’ are those that you see fishermen wearing, you know with the low brim that covers over the ear. But then if you are prone to burn anything that covers the face scalp and neck is good.
I remember going to my great uncles funeral in NC. It was about 12 years ago. He was very rich and very well loved in society up there. The men wore long expensive wool coats and hats and the women all were wearing coats and gloves. I felt so out of place in my black skirt and no stockings (panty hose.) People wear fancy hats and gloves here for weddings and funerals.
When I was little all those years ago, the Sunday School bus used to collect me. I always wore dresses and fancy socks and shoes.
No. Golf. For. me.
And sadly no holiday plans.
I guess it’s not a celebrated holiday there, Ti.
My daughter looks great in hats, too! Must be a skipped generation thing.
Oh my daughter does too. SIGH… and I used to love to go to golf tournaments. My husband actually proposed to me at one–Sixteenth hole. Still don’t remember who won!
There are actually quite a few Americans living here. But you have to remember WHY you celebrate the 4th. It was Independance against the English Tyranny. I however (I am being told what to type here) am not allowed to celebrate it since I have been reclaimed by a Brit. It is like the Borg. Resistance WAS futile. I succumbed.
We all know why, but I think the Brits might as well celebrate being rid of us. Kind of like the little dance I will do when my kids move out. Sure I will miss them.
But.
Ha! And then it’s like the Brits have a distant cousin remembered with fondness, and they think it was always so much fun at the cousin’s house. But then they come over to visit and realize a day or two is about all they can take, and its a good thing there is a pond between them or they might kill someone. hahaha
Julia it is the heat. They all whine they want the heat here and then they actually go to say Florida and all they do is whine about how hot it is. lol
Hats don’t suit me. I wear a visor instead.
I still have a ton of visors from my college days. Maybe I should pull them out. Although I think I need to protect the top of my head too these days.
Okay too entirely funny –because I picked number 11 before I even read the caption!!!!! And number two is my second choice although if I get the crown too I’ll take number one!!!!!
We know great hats, Dee.
I love hats. Baseball caps, weird and wacky hats, and classically fashionable fedoras. Having been sunburned for a lot percentage of my life, I actually do believe in a hat as a sunblock. And they’re fun! The travelling bar hat is cracking me up, as is the football field, which looks like a halloween costume gone wrong.
And no feathers. Ever.
I think if I could do more elaborate hats than a ball cap, I could do feathers. But respectable light feathering, like the Queen. Not the big ol’ feathers reaching out to TX from New England.
I look terrible in baseball hats too. But as I’ve gotten older I’ve developed a sun allergy and need to start wearing a hat when I go out for any length of time. So am looking for a crushable sunhat. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Breathability is the key. I wear baseball hats now, but they get so hot.
I think I’ve seen some at Coldwater Creek. I might try something like that, too. Baseball hats leave my neck exposed. I’m allergic to most sunscreens so I hate to use them if I can avoid it– but can’t avoid it mostly.
Saw some really cute ones when I was in Hot Springs. But stupidly didn’t clue in and buy one.
I love hats and I actually look good in most hats. (Well, not the weird ones with birds or vegetables!)
But hats aren’t in fashion anymore, so I always feel silly wearing them. Then I take them off and have hat-hair and look even worse than if I’d never had the hat on in the first place.
It’s a conundrum.
You need to go to horse races. It seems they are in fashion there. Or maybe the UK. If we were Brits, we could wear fascinators everywhere! Or Ti will come tell us that would make us weird, too.
Other than an occasional baseball cap, I don’t wear hats. I use to wear them to church in my much younger days. My grandmother would wear a derby that I called her Daisy Duck hat. It looked just like the hat that Daisy wore. I wore berets to church. I must say that Queen Elizabeth has good taste in hats. So did Jacqueline Kennedy. I’ve seen golf on TV which enough for me to know that I wouldn’t enjoy it. We are going to a baseball game tonight though to see a Cleveland Indians minor league play. That’s more my style.
Sandi, that’s me, the occasional baseball cap and only when absolutely necessary. Your grandma’s hat sounds cute.
I do love Queen E’s hats, and Jacqueline Kennedy was beautiful in hats. We’ve lost some of that old glamor. Golf live is more fun than golf on TV, but I wouldn’t go without the skybox perk. Spoiled. Baseball live is more fun than golf, have to say.
when I was little we wore doilies on our heads to church because even little girls had to have their heads covered. My mother’s veils were gorgeous! I think hats are cool! But I look stupid in them. Sadly.
I remember wearing white gloves for Easter, when I was really young. We felt so fancy. I’m glad we live more comfortably these days but I do miss the way people used to dress up.
