I CAN’T RESIST

by Jacquie D'Alessandro on June 27, 2012

Mae West famously said, “I generally avoid temptation unless I can’t resist it.”  My biggest temptations that I can’t resist seem to revolve around the kitchen and pantry.  There are certain foods that, if they’re in my house, I simply can’t stay away from.  It’s like they’re calling me…”Jacquie, we’re here in the pantry…come get us!”  Of course none of these irresistible goodies are in any way calorie free,  Why, oh, why can’t I find carrots irresistible?

I like carrots, but they just don't call to me

One of my I Can’t Resist things are chips–but only certain kinds.  A bag of Lays could sit in my pantry for years and I’d pass it by.  But put a bag of Doritos or Ruffles in my midst and those suckers are gone in nothing flat.  Peanuts don’t interest me, but I could eat cashews all day long.  Oreos–eh.  Never bother with them.  But if I buy a box of Whippets, those babies won’t make it through the evening. And if you’ve never had a Whippet–whoa, baby.  They’re like a Mallomar, but all grown-up and a thousand times better and they have a touch of raspberry filling as well. YUM!  Dark chocolate? Blech.  Milk chocolate? Can’t resist.

If you love marshmallows, these are the Best Cookies Ever

Of course one person’s Can’t Resist is another person’s Doesn’t Interest Me. This actually works out well at my house because the DH and I have some different Cant Resist foods–which means I don’t have to share MY Can’t Resist foods, Bwahahahaha!  But we do overlap on certain ones–like Whippets.  And Jordan Almonds.  For reasons I can’t figure out, I can eat Jordan Almonds ’til the cows come home (btw, what does that mean? When did the cows leave home??).  Regular almonds don’t do it for me, but Jordan Almonds? Can’t stay away from them.

My nemesis

So, for the sake of my hips, I rarely buy Doritos or Whippets or Jordan Almonds, ’cause when I do, those darn dry cleaners end up shrinking my clothes :) .  I think that’s why I like shoes so much–I can gain a few Doritos pounds and while my traitorous pants won’t button, my shoes still fit great.  Thank you, Manolo Blahnik.

Are there certain foods you can’t resist? Or maybe something else–like shoes or collectibles? Do you indulge–or do you try to resist?  How does that resisting work out for you?

Oreos, Oreos, wherefore art thou, Oreos? Deny thy scales, refuse they caloric content… and yea, thou will dwell in Kathleen’s stomach forever… :)

A kind of trail mix with nuts and M&Ms… but I’m good and just buy a small bag of M&Ms and a small bag/packet of peanuts and mix in a cup… takes me back to finding the bowls of candy/nuts leftover from parents’ bridge parties…

Love the combo of nuts and M&M’s! Hmmm…probably that’s why I don’t keep M&M’s in my house (or rather I CAN’T keep them in my house–they’re gone in nothing flat!).

The cows go in search of better tasting clover and then when their udders are full come home to be milked.
My temptations? So many. Carrot cake or anything with buttercream or cream cheese icing is dead once it reaches my door. Or chocolate. Milk chocolate. I inhale it. Cadbury Eggs must die. Luckily I live in England where they can be found all year round, AND we have a Cadbury Egg chocolate bar called Twisted. Ruffles (which only recently made it here to this country) is another thing that is not allowed to live in my house because it must die that night. So must Jaffa Cakes. Never had one? Jaffa cake is actually a cake like cookie with a layer of tangy orange marmalade and then a coating of chocolate over the top of that. You cannot eat JUST one. They ALL must die. The entire package. There are so many wonderful chocolates here from this country and other countries. Oh man I even love Kindereggs. It is a chocolate egg with a small toy prize inside from Germany. Not much chocolate but it is very milky and I love that. Maybe one day I will have to send care packages for all my American friends to try some of the lovely wonders of Britain.
Bleh. I am drooling now!

I’ve had Jaffa cake, Ti, and it’s really yummy. I’ve never heard of this Cadbury egg candy bar called Twisted, however it’s clearly something I MUST HAVE. Obviously a trip to London is in order. Who’s with me?!?!

I can never resist anything that is chocolate, and if it dark and has almonds or cashews, forget it, it is just calling out my name … or Potato chips, especially with they are salt and vinigar. Or Popcorn with lots of butter and salt.. But Books are the biggies… I have an addicition and I hope it never stops…

Oh, Whippets! Oh yes, please. I can’t resist chocolate marshmallow stuff either. Chocolate Marshmallow Nabisco Pinwheels, too- perfect chocolate to marshmallow to cookie ratio.

Jordan almonds, I could resist, I say, but then if I had one it would most likely lead to another, so… Jelly beans, I can’t resist. I also love some sugary cereals, like Count Chocula. Oh, Count! Why can’t I resist you?

P.S. the name of Nabisco Pinwheels escaped me, so I googled Chocolate marshmallow cookies and so many amazing recipes that I now want to bake came up. OH! Oh dear.

I’m like you with potato chips, but put a bag of fritos and I’m all over them. And if there is cake — it’s all over. I remember an episode of Sex in the City where Miranda makes a cake–eats some and then throws it out and then goes back and carefully gets it out of the trash and eats it all. Let’s just say that was an eerily familiar scene…

Oh yeah, cake. Cake, I also have a hard time resisting cake. Any kind.

I remember that episode! She finally had to pour dish soap on it so she wouldn’t eat it! Ah, Miranda…we’ve all been there!

I do believe that cows come home when it is time to be milked. I can’t resist chocolate.

But where do they go in the meantime??
I seriously wish I hated chocolate. Seriously.

I am very fortunate in that no matter how many nachos or ketchup chips (I know!) or chocolate covered raisins I eat, my books always fit me. In fact, I have books that I bought 30 years ago that still fit me just fine!
