I’ve mentioned before how much I love Mad Men, and I apologize right now, because if you haven’t seen the last two weeks’ episodes, I’m about to mention some Big Plot Stuff, so if you care about spoilers, we must say adieu before you see too much (sniff sniff).
But the thing is, I want to know the thoughts of folks out there who do follow the show. The season finale is this Sunday, and I have a THEORY. I’m laying it out there, folks, and I want to see if anyone agrees with me, or if anyone has a theory of their own.
My theory: Don is going to approach Peggy in the finale and ask her to return to SCDP as a partner.
Why? Because when she left two episodes ago, it was clear that Don wanted her back (duh). Also, in Shut the Door, Have a Seat (the season 3 finale that is, imho, one of the best hours of television ever) he told her he that if she didn’t work for him he’d spend the rest of his life trying to hire her. And, because I think the show is as much about Peggy as it is about Don, so she can’t really be gone.
Okay, fine, but why next episode? Why not next season? Well, they might let it drag over the break, but Mad Men likes to jump time during the break, and so they (thankfully) wrap things up at seasons’ end more than most shows. So that’s one reason. But the primary reason is Lane. Lane killed himself as a direct result of a) what he did, and b) that Don didn’t offer him a way out, instead forcing him to resign. For the record, I don’t think Don did anything to feel guilty for (it’s perfectly reasonable to demand a letter of resignation from someone who embezzles and he couldn’t have foreseen suicide), but it’s human nature that he would feel guilty. That he would look back at his relationship with the people he works with and examine his relationship with them. And because of that, I think he would land at Peggy.
So my prediction is that he’ll approach her. That he’ll have another heart to heart with her and ask her to come back as a partner.
I’ll go even further and say that I think she’ll accept, but that one might be left hanging so that we don’t know she accepted until next season.
So, that’s my prediction. What’s yours?
And now I’m off to see the first matinee of Madagascar 3…because its just that kind of day!

OK, for the record, Madagascar was a hoot. And I love living in a relatively small town. I think half of my neighborhood was there!
Glad it was fun!
I have never sat through an episode of Mad Men. Does this make me bad?
I love the Ice Age movies. The theme park we like to go to, Alton Towers, now uses some of the characters as their theme. I swear I love the squirrel Scrat the most!
Only as bad as I am, Ti, which is bad as you want to be. We’re bad!
Now I’ve got that old high school cheer in my head. “We’re bad, we know it, we’ve got the team to show it!”
Which is really scary as I avoided pep rallies and football games in high school about as diligently as I would now avoid, oh, mad cow disease
Ice Age is awesome!!! And yes, you are bad. Bad to the bone!
I have absolutely no quality input to this conversation, however, I did hear a humor that some female was now off the show officially.
lalahahalalalalalalalalalalalala
fingers in ears.
I can’t hear you.
It wouldn’t bother me at all if that’s what happens, but it seems a little fast. (I always thought the series would end with Peggy making partner). I expect Peggy will spend a little while becoming a huge rival and competitor for Don first. But that’s just a guess, too.
And doesn’t it cost money to buy in as a partner? Money Peggy clearly doesn’t have now? (Unless the firm gets Lane’s suicide money and they use that)
But you’re right, Close the Door, Have a Seat is one of the best hours of TV in a long, long time.
Those are all good points. But I like all my favorite characters in one place … So selfishly i want her back at scdp!
I will be seeing Madagascar sometime this week for sure. I have two kids who have been talking about it for weeks.
Mad Men. I hope Peggy refuses. I hope she sets herself up to be his chief competition and he can never win against her and he will realize what he let go. He will get that they gave Joan a partnership for a really awful reason and not to Peggy for really good reasons and she will make them pay.
I agree about Lane. Don did not owe him an out. Lane was really a coward in a lot of ways.
He already gets that about Joan. He’s the one who thought it was reprehensible. And yeah, it would be fun to see them butt heads, but I think I’d rather she be back. He’s had a pretty decent arc this season. That would cap it off.
Yay! At the front of te popcorn line! Later y’all!
I know he gets that about Joan, but I don’t think he realized it about Peggy in the moment. And I am not sure Peggy wants back.
By the way, when he threw that money at her?? I would have kicked his ass, I think. That was really awful of him.
I’d forgotten about the money toss. yes, that was uber-shitty. Re Peggy in the moment, no, I don’t think he did either. I think Lane’s suicide triggers his revelation. Where Peggy is concerned, he has a blind spot.
I don’t even watch Mad Men and I have to agree with you. Plus, I’ve seen other online speculation to that effect. Mad Men is the next show I am going to catch up with online. I’m currently on Walking Dead. Oh, and maybe that Hatfield-McCoy thing. I miss so many great shows!
Madagascar 3, have fun. That Chris Rock circus bit already annoys me, no way I am seeing that film.
Oh, cool on the online spec. Maybe I am right! I did see something about Jared Harris being interviewed about his leaving the show, and he said something to the effect of “well, Peggy left” and there was speculation that she was done. But a) why would Jarid know what the future lies since he’s now off the show, and b) I wouldn’t put it past the producers to ask him to say something like that just to keep folks wondering.
Walking Dead is on our TBW list, and Don just mentioned H-M to me the other day, so I think it’ll be in the queue soon!
As for Madagascar … that bit did look annoying, but I genuinely like the films as a whole. Hopefully they haven’t jumped the shark, as I’ll be annoyed that I’m going on not just waiting to buy it for the on video. But, hey, popcorn for breakfast. How bad can that be?
The Land Before Time was big when my kids were little. That one went to numerous sequels, and we had to see every single one until they finally outgrew it. I think we only made it to 6, but I’m pretty sure there were more after that. I’m sure Madagascar 3 will be cute overall.
