The hell-cyon days of May…

by Kathleen O'Reilly on June 5, 2012

In song and poems, May is a month of celebration, and dance.  A time for merry-making and celebrating something that probably had to do with agriculture, but I don’t remember.  And yet, in modern times, May is still a month of celebration, and dance  and HELL!  Seriously, who decided to put everything into May?  For the record, I have two children.  They are not children that participate in five thousand things; I am a selfish Mommy and don’t want to do that.  However, in the month of May, we have been to EIGHT concerts.  EIGHT.  And that’s just instrumental concerts.  We’ve had the senior concert, the combined concert, the district-wide combined concert.  We’ve had recitals from music instructors.  We’ve had recitals given by our postal carrier (just kidding, but honestly, it feels like it!).  We’ve had concerts for legislators (and you wonder why government never gets anything done?  It’s because they’re listening to music all day).

All this song has got me POOPED!  Every year, I think it will be June that is the bad month.  That’s the ending month for us Yanks in NY. But it’s never June.  June is a breeze compared to May.  I’m thinking that back in the day, after the farmers had planted their crops, and all the community members sang and danced and prayed, I’m thinking those farmers just went out to their fields, laid down, and pretty much didn’t get up until harvest.  I understand that.  If I had a field (which I would have, except that I was too busy to plant my garden in May this year), I think I would collapse, too.

I’m sorry.  I just needed to vent.

In other news, did anybody else watch The Hatfields and the McCoys?  I watched Part III on Saturday, and really loved the whole thing.  The acting was top notch (especially the dude who plays Bad Frank).  I hope we see more of these longer, more epic style productions.  I could really dig some serious story-telling instead of cat-fights, and comic one-liners.

Anybody else?  How is your Tuesday today?  Are you still pooped, laying (lying?) in the fields, watching the transit of Venus?  Any great TV shows that you’re looking forward to in the summer season?

Have not seen that show. Here in the UK it has been all about the Diamond Jubilee. Now that it is over we can concentrate on the Olympics.

Oh sweetie… the trials of parenting… Actually, pity the poor school administrators.. they have to attend EVERYTHING…. yup, guess that’s why they get paid the ‘big bucks’.. When my hubby was a middle school principal, there was something every night of the week and sometimes more than one… He’s now retired… maybe I should volunteer him back to the current principals for a ‘fill-in’….

I missed the Hatfields and McCoys, but it’ll give me something new to glom. Almost finished with NCIS. Looking forward to the second season of Falling Skies. And the ending of the Closer. But mainly a nice break from always watching TV. Gearing up for the fall :)

I wanted to see Hatfields and Mccoys! I’ll see if its on Demand yet.

My Tuesday started off with what should have been a quick three mile run in 90% humidity. I won’t go into the gory details, but I almost died. Days like this, I am so glad I have a pool. I went in with everything but my shoes and watch, LOL

Key question: did you take the phone with you in the pool?

I guess it’s our wimpy Northeastern mentality, but around here they warn you to stick to indoor activities and not go running outside when it’s high heat-humidity. And I listen. Because I am a wimp. However, it’s only in the mid sixties here with a cool breeze, so no excuses.

Oh, totally missed the Hatfields/McCoys. But I do love the idea of more productions like it.

I bet they’ll be repeating on the History Channel. You should check the guide.

The craziest thing about May once they’re in college is moving them out of the dorm and back home. You’re going to love it, Kathleen. One day! Not that it isn’t an adjustment to welcome them back home after that big taste of freedom living away from you. At first it’s all good cozy fun but then comes the whining.

Among the gems: “I am an adult now.” (said with a straight face- you try not to laugh). “I’m not used to living on your schedule.” (you think of those crazy Mays past and how you were a slave to their schedules, since giving birth). “I miss my friends.” (but, I thought you missed ME!).
