AT THE MOVIES/WEEKEND PLANS

by Jacquie D'Alessandro on January 27, 2012

I agree with Sherri’s post earlier this week that the most important thing about the Oscars (to me, anyway) is what everyone will wear.  Still, there are movies up for awards and I guess I should give them a bit of attention in between oogling the gowns.   Nine films are nominated for Best Picture.  I’ve only seen one of them–The Help.  So–that gets my vote.  And frees me up to get back to the gowns :)

I live in a small town, which, for a small town, has a really nice movie theatre.  It has 8 screens, good food, and a concierge level where you can get drinks.  Pretty swanky.  BUT–apparently movies don’t stay in this theatre for very long.  Case in point–on December 27th the DH and I headed there to see the movie New Year’s Eve.  And it was no longer playing.  WHAT?!? It wasn’t even New Year’s Eve yet and it was gone from our swanky theatre.  So now I guess we’ll watch it when it comes out on DVD–probably in July.  Yippee.

There’s a new movie opening today–One For the Money, based on the first Stephanie Plum book by Janet Evanovich.  I’ve seen the trailer and the commercials.  Katherine Heigl plays Stephanie, Debbie Reynolds is Grandma Mazur, I’ve never heard of the dude playing Joe Morelli, and the oh-so-hot Daniel Sunjata from the show Rescue Me is Ranger.   It looks fun and I’d like to see this flick to see how the book translated to the screen.

On Saturday the DH and I are attending our neighborhood’s Jeans and Beans country/Western party.  There’s a chili cook-off (the DH is entering), a dessert cook-off (I’m entering) as well as line dancing (led by me and the DH) and square dancing.  Yee-haw!  Do-si-do your partner then promenade her home!

Me and the DH at last year's country/Western party. Yee-haw!

On Sunday we’ll rest.  Or maybe try to catch one of the other nine films up for the Oscar.  Or yeah, maybe we’ll rest :)

What are y’all doing this weekend?  Share your thoughts on some the Oscar films you’ve seen (or are you like me and have only seen one?).  Are you planning to see One For the Money?  Did anyone see New Year’s Eve–or did it leave your local theatre before the ball dropped?

Jeans and Beans! I love it! :)

We’re having girls afternoon at the movies today. It was a toss-up between Red Tails and One for the Money. We opted to go for laughs and Stephanie Plum. I’ve read the books, my friend hasn’t. It’ll be interesting to see what we each think of the movie.

Headed out to see One for the Money! The reviews are not good, but I am hoping that fans of the book series might see things differently. I will report back!

I liked it! Thought it was a lot of fun, and a pretty good interpretation. Not sure when Joe Morelli got so Irish, but overall it worked. Needs more Lula! I give it a B minus, or one and a half thumbs up.

I would agree, Sherri. Heigl surprised me (I’m not normally a fan), Ranger was good (great chemistry with Stephanie) and I would have loved to have seen more of Lula and Grandma (good casting!). The actor who played Morelli didn’t do it for me. Overall, though it was entertaining.

We haven’t had a local theater in almost 30 years. I can’t remember the last movie I saw at a theater.

Come to my town, Chey–as long as you don’t want to see New Year’s Eve in December, we’re good to go :)

Saw New Year’s Eve twice and loved it both times.

How did you see it TWICE??? It was gone from the theatre in like days! Next time I’m going to let you schedule the movie outings because I stink at it!

Jason O’Mara plays the lead in the new TV show Terra Nova and I like him in that. I don’t know if I will see One For the Money. From everything I have seen, they aren’t staying true to the characters, or at least the ones I have built in my imagination. My Cousin Vinney for her father? In the books, he quiet and taciturn. So far Sherri Shepard is the only one even close to what I could picture, although a bit on the short side for Lula.

I love the character of Lula–I think the casting was good there. I bet she’ll be a scream!

I always imagined Queen Latifa, but I think Sherri could do it. She spells her name right, so how could she go wrong?

I haven’t seen it, but it looks really good. This weekend is a DVD marathon for us because my 11 year old is visiting her older brother so we can watch movies she can’t:) I picked up Super 8, Red Riding Hood, Straw Dogs and a couple of odd horror movies.

Have fun this weekend!

Haven’t seen Super 8 but heard it was good. I saw Red Riding Hood and thought it was scary–but that’s just me.

We’re having a dinner with swing dancing tonight as a fundraiser for the music department. I’m TERRIFIED because I do not dance at all; however, I will try not to look silly.

As for the movies, I’m dying to see One for the Money, although I think Ranger is SO not what I pictured as Ranger in my head. Daniel Sunjata feels more casanova than mercenary to me, and I had pictured some dark and dangerous commando dude. However, I am willing to be swayed.

I’m dying to see a ton of movies, but I don’t know when. And now I want to see Moneyball. :)

I didn’t picture him as Ranger either! I am seeing it tomorrow. Will report in.

The weekend will be all about Michael Crichton’s Micro. I finally got my copy. As for the Oscars…Dresses and BRAD PITT!!! That’s what the Oscars are all about. Only thing missing to make the night complete Ryan Gosslin. Guess we can’t have it all.

Reply

Dee Davis Dee Davis January 27, 2012 at 4:11 pm

Micro? I another of his actual books? Or something someone else wrote as him?

Dresses and Brad Pitt–that sums it up very nicely!

Jeans and beans, I love it!

I’ve seen Midnight in paris, the Help, The descendants, and The Artist, which was amazingly good (and I was very skeptical). I am going to do Moneyball on DVD. I don’t want to see War Horse because it is a tearjerker, but I do want to see Extremely Loud. I read the writer’s previous book and really liked it. I am thinking of seeing Hugo. Tree of Life? I don’t know. I would rather see One for the Money. What does that say about me??? :-)

Dee Davis Dee Davis January 27, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Hugo is sooooo good. You’ll love it. Really well done. I was pleasantly surprised. I do want to see War Horse. And The Artist. And was thinking of seeing Moneyball on DVD as well. Not sure about Extremely Loud it seems so sad… And Tree of Life will probably be a wait for DVD one for me.

Think the Artist will win. It’s so Academyesque.

I have nothing planned this weekend except sleeping in past 6:28 am which seems to now be my new brain wake up time. And I am really hoping my phone does not wake me with people on the other end begging me to come into work. (It is the weekend dude…let me sleep!!)

As for the movies, I must admit I am not following any of it. Sad, I know. The last movie we went to see was the HP/Deathly Hallows II. It was at a really nice cinema in Nottingham which was a train ride away. (We take the train to the city! Not many can say THAT!)

I must admit though, I cannot wait to see The Hobbit. I want to dress like an elf and go!! (Yes with ears!) I am kooky like that. I scare my husband. Pity the man. He really does put up with a lot.

No big plans for this weekend here, either, although a friend and I are making plans to see one for the money. I mean, Jason O’Mara looks pretty darn cute as Joe Morelli, and the casting for Ranger and Lula looking dead on as well. I hope it’s good!

But I have plenty of books to keep me company this weekend.. i am currently reading Head over Heels by Jill Shalvis.

I’m planning to see One for the Money with my kid sister. We both love the books, well, the first ten anyway. She kept reading. I gave up and threw my own imaginary wedding for Stephanie and Joe because Janet just won’t get to it. By now, they have three kids (Joe Jr, Ivan (the Terrible), and Susan- who wants to change her name to Princess Sarita), a black lab, and two rescue chihuahuas that get into all kinds of trouble with Grandma Mazur. The end.

I did see Midnight in Paris and the Help. Midnight in Paris was really good, surprised me. I love Owen Wilson, but I wasn’t sure how he would do with Woody Allen. Woody Allen is up and down for me. (And I prefer not to think of his personal life).

I’m not a big Woody Allen fan either (although I walked about two feet behind him the other day) but loved that movie. Was wonderfully surprised. And thought the Help was fabulous. Saw Temple Grandin last night. Really good movie if you guys haven’t seen it. I can see why it won so many awards. Claire Danes is great. or is it Clare?
