Demons and Kindles and Tech Stuff, Oh My!

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck/J. Kenner on January 26, 2012

Yesterday, I shared a buncha covers on my blog for incoming Demon Hunting Soccer Mom books (I hope you guys go take a look! The post is here!)

I’m super excited to be diving into the world of indie/ePublishing, and as I told some commenters to the blog and Facebook page, one of the things that is so exhilarating about the experience is knowing that I can take Kate and the story in directions that might have been frowned upon or denied me in traditional publishing.  Such as, for example, a collection of short stories (the cover to the left is for a short story, actually, and I have a cover on my site for an upcoming anthology) or a spin off YA series for Allie.

Considering we’re giving away a Kindle Fire here, I figured the general topic of eReaders and techie stuff was fair game.

So I’m curious – what’s your favorite thing about eReaders? Least favorite?  Have you got a favorite techie device?  It doesn’t have to do with reading.  Mine would have to be my phone, but it covers soooo many other things–I just like having what I need (email, Kindle, maps, calculator, Netflix) right there at my fingertips.  And, yeah, even a kitchen appliance is a techie thing, at least for purposes of this convo, so if you’re much more excited about your Cuisinart than your iPhone, tell us why!  We’d love to hear…and remember to leave your comment for a chance to win the Kindle Fire!  (Even if you love your Cuisinart, think of the recipe books you could download…..)

I wish they would invent an ereader that was waterproof for bath and pool-time reading . ..

I love the convenience of buying books on the Kindle. I can have books to read within minutes of being released. No waiting days for them to be shipped after release. Now that’s sweet!

I’m in love with my new smart phone. It does about 4 trillion things–and I only know about 7 of them so far, but I’m working those 7 things to death, LOL!

that’s the way I always feel about technology. so many cool functions and I only know and understand two! Actually, that’s also the way I feel about my brain!

I love gadgets and all my ereaders, but I love being able to go download a book immediately. Like all the Demon books so I can catch up again before the new ones come out!!!!!!!!

My favorite thing about eReaders is the ability to carry one little device and have lots of books to choose from, that’s great when traveling. The least favorite for me (I have a regular Kindle) is that it isn’t a touch screen. My favorite techie device is actually two – my iPhone and my DVR. I couldn’t live without either one of them.

I don’t yet have an ereader, but I like the idea of being able to have so many books that take up so little space. My favourite tech thing is my computer.

Great cover!! As for favorite tech thing, I think it’s my computer. Although I love my phone, I don’t like the idea that I can communicated with 24/7, that I am responsible for doing things 24/7, and that I need to check for deals at whatever store I happen to be at 24/7. It makes me feel guilty for not.maximizing.every.second.of.my.day. But the computer… ah. I get to loaf on my computer. I can check the weather, or browser-flit from one subject matter to another, or simply stare out my window at the world.

Yes, I love my computer.

I love my phone. It has everything I need on it almost all of the time.

My favorite thing about e-readers is that its much more convenient when traveling. The thing I like least is that I like to actually hold a physical book and turn the pages.

Ok. I am so not that techy. I have my husbands pc that I use at home and my android phone. I must admit I am lost without my phone. I am forever looking things up for work. I work as an activities director at a care home and we are always looking up things. I would bring my lappie but since it is older than the dinosaurs and heavier than my 13 year old daughter, I do not bother. Maybe the Technical Fairies will bless me with a tablet. I mean, they, (my lil lubb-dees) absolutely love looking at all the reminiscent sites and craft sites and news and all the other clever things you can look up online that amaze the older generation.
Though I have to admit I love love love my mp3 player. It rocks me all the way home!!!!

I’m absolutely addicted to my Kindle – first my 2nd generation kindle and now my Kindle Touch. I spend waaaaay more money on books than I ever did before. That darn one-click buy feature for Amazon is death on my checkbook!

And I find the idea of Demon Hunting Soccer Moms hilarious! Frankly, the soccer moms I know could totally kick arse.

I have to say my fav techie device has to be my tablet. Love that I have the Kindle app and can take it with me whereever I go. So much easier than taking books and a laptop.
What like least is probaby the fact that I am always forgeting and I try to right click all the time to do things like copy and paste, save a picture, etc. Can,t think of anything I don’t like about th ereader capibilities of my tablet.

I love that you can get Kindle App, or Nook App, or iBooks or whichever and buy where you want instead of all at the same place, if you choose.

My favorite techy thing would be my laptop– followed by my kindle. That’s about as techy as I get. LOL I LOVE my kindle– the only drawback for me is not seeing the covers in their lovely full color. I love covers. Oooh, but the Kindle Fire is color. O_O

Oh yeah, watching video on the Kindle Fire is awesome. I watched the entire first season of Downton Abbey on my KF thru Amazon Video with the 30 day trial when I got the Kindle in late November. The audio isn’t bad but is better with earphones.

iPad is color, too! Though I wouldn’t turn down a Fire. You can’t have too many gizmos imho

My favorite tech is my iPhone. It does everything! Seriously, I don’t know what I did before the calendar app on the thing. Now I never miss an appointment. My hairdresser’s computer even texts me to remind me the day before my next haircut rather than calling. Love it. I had an iPod Touch before the phone and I carried it everywhere. Stuck waiting in line – no problem – pull out the iPod and start reading or listen to an audiobook. It’s a first gen and just recently the volume bar disappeared when I took it out of the dock. No fix found so far. I’m so bummed. I can still listen to the audiobooks when it’s docked but that defeats the purpose of the thing. I liked that I could carry both the iPhone and the iPod and mostly use the iPod for reading and listening so I didn’t run the battery down on the phone.

can you “reset to factory settings”? That might fix it since it sounds like a software problem.

Our iTouch won’t go back to a dark screen, so it drains super fast, but the 8yo is the only one who uses it now so it’s not a crisis.

I think the thing I love most about my kindle, is that I can take it anywhere I go. Especially when I am traveling. Or when i am waiting at the doctors office or waiting on a friend when we go to the hockey game on Friday night.. I don’t look like I am just standing around.. But the thing I dislike most, is that mine has no light on it.. I have to get myself a cover that has a light on it. I think kindle, for what you pay for it should come with a lighted screen..Maybe the new ones do, but mine does not…

I thought I’d hate the cover w/ the light, but it turns out I love it.

I like ereaders for travel and for when I am taking kids to some kid venue where I have to sit for a couple of hours. How did people do this before smart phones and ereaders, I ask you? Oh yeah…the paperback, LOL.

I do not like that I dont know how long a book is, or that I can’t flip easily to the front or end and back to my place. I have an old Kindle. Maybe these features have been fixed since then.

Sherri Browning Erwin Sherri Browning Erwin January 26, 2012 at 9:41 am

They have. My Kindle app on my iPad had an update that fixed that- now I have page numbers and a slider to show where I am at. But not on my old Kindle, which I use for some daytime reading because it’s easy on the eyes.

Love the covers, Julie. Clever titles.

I don’t have an eReader but I would imagine that my favorite perk would be the ability to have several books in my purse at the same time. How cool is that?? My favorite device is most definitely my smart phone. I never thought I would use it for much more than phone calls, but I am still finding more fun uses every day. Some functions are even productive! Haha

I have an embarrassingly high number of apps in iTunes. I wish I could categorize them somehow in the program (SO glad we can now put folders on the phone — that is a sweet feature!)

I love my kindle because it is so easy to travel with. Instead of taking a bag of books I can take the kindle. Takes up less room in the 5th wheel when traveling. I’m currently at Myrtle Beach and will be heading to Disney World in ten days. I have a dumb cell phone which I only use for calling the family.

I love my iPhone/iPad/MacBook Pro combo. I love how they all work together and I can carry what I need where I go, and it feels like there’s nothing I can’t do. I dream of having an iHouse and iCar, with everything all synced up and easy to operate from anywhere. I could start my iOven when I’m on my way home from the store in my iCar (wait, who needs the store? I could iShop from home!). When I’m in my iBed, I could make sure all the iDoors are locked and iLights are off at night, and then wake up and start the iCoffeemaker from the comfort of bed. Yep, I’m ready for that.
