Oscar nominations came out yesterday morning. The main question: What will they wear?
Best Actress Nominations:
Glenn Close, “Albert Nobbs”
Viola Davis, “The Help”
Rooney Mara, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
Meryl Streep, “The Iron Lady”
Michelle Williams, “My Week With Marilyn”
What, no Charlize Theron? Reese Witherspoon? Sandra Bullock? We know they would all look fabulous.
Alas… Let’s take a look at what our nominees have worn and try to guess how they might go for the big show.
Glenn Close and Meryl Streep in the Best actress category? That hasn’t happened since… 1988, when Streep was nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of Lindy Chamberlain in A Cry in the Dark and Close was nominated- and won- for Best Actress for her role as the Marquise de Marteuil in Dangerous Liaisons (love that movie! well done!).
Glenn Close:
Glenn was ultra-feminine in Victorian inspired lace back in the 80s, and she cuts a classic silhouette in black in 2012 at the Golden Globes. For the Oscars, considering her decidedly masculine role, I think she should go for girly glamour, with an understated elegance, and maybe… gold? Can’t you see her in gold?
Or maybe a color. Peach? Purple?
Meryl Streep:
Meryl seems to be a bit challenged at award shows. Someone who looks so great on film in her movies should be able to pull off a stunning awards show look, no?
Between Glenn and Meryl, it could be a real diva showdown! But considering they both prefer to let their work speak louder than their personal appearance, I don’t think we’ll see much to excite us from them. So it’s up to the others.
Viola Davis:
Check out Viola, Amy Adams, and yes, even Meryl, all looking fantastic at a previous Academy Awards.
Rooney Mara:
Rooney seems to be taking her role a little too seriously. She played a badass, yes, but that doesn’t mean she has to go severe at awards shows. She’s almost always in black.
She could also look to The Help ladies for help. Like Emma Stone!
Or she could try a pop of color.
Michelle Williams:
Michelle might be our best hope for best dressed. She has looked amazing, and she has looked matronly, and sometimes, surprisingly odd. But I’m hoping for amazing.
She might try something like Jessica Alba's lavender Gucci from the 2012 Golden Globes, flowery fun young, and a pretty color.
Who will win (ahem, Meryl Streep), who cares? It’s all about the gowns, right? Who do you think will be the best dressed of our nominees? Or overall? Worst dressed?
And don’t forget, we’re giving a Kindle Fire to one lucky commenter on Valentine’s Day. Will you be our Valentine? Keep commenting, and good luck!

It is all about the gowns but I have to say I’m rooting for Viola and it’s the only movie I’ve seen so far.
Love my dress, Sherri! I agree that I would do better in a darker color, but right up my alley. Thanks!
I think it will be Glenn Close… I really think she should get the Oscar too… The part she played was such a transformation… really amazing…And she will be striking in what ever she wears.
I haven’t seen it, but yeah, it looks like it could be a winner. I love Glenn Close, too.
I’m not sure what I would pick for everyone but I sure do love watching to see what they wear. I love watching the Fashion Police the next day to see what they think and if they agree with me or not.
Yes, that’s always fun!
My replies are getting all wonted up and landing in the wrong places. LOVE the Diane Kruger–would totally wear it. The Vera is beautiful but I think I’d fade away in the poorness.
That’s supposed to be poofiness — stupid spellcheck
Diane Kruger’s dress would be awesome on you. The Vera, probably too poofy, yes.
I’m rooting for Meryl Streep and I would choose Dolce & Gabbana for her. Their red-carpet dresses tend to be stylish but not crazy. When I see D & G on stars, I usually think he or she looks elegantly and appropriately dressed.
Actually, that’s a good point. I think you’re right about D & G.
Gosh. Words escape me. I wish I had the body to carry off even half of these gowns!
Well, yeah, there’s that.
No. Kidding.
Sherri, I always love your fashion blogs!
Thanks, Laura!
I was really underwhelmed with the nomination list this year. No big surprises, and there’s nothing that I greatly care about (or feel were snubbed). Hollywood needs a movie makeover as well as the dresses.
My $.02.
Yeah, there weren’t big surprises and I haven’t seen most of the films. The Artist did not excite me. I haven’t seen it, but silent movie? Seriously? Julia, did you see it? What did you think?
I’m so behind on movies this year, it’s pathetic. But Saturday I’m finally making it to Sherlock Holmes. Yay!
That’s the only one I’ve seen recently.
I was wondering about the Artist. I was curious how they could take ‘old movie’ sensibilities and translate into commercial success — without talking and big explosions.
A friend saw it and really enjoyed it (she’s very artsy that way).
I agree on a dark color for Meryl. Maybe a deep plum or sapphire blue. My biggest problem with her dresses is the CUT of the dress. She doesn’t choose styles that flatter her. She usually gets too much volume in the hip area. A slimming, simpler cut with just a splash of jewelry (earrings OR necklace) would look lovely. IMHO.
Yes, she would be lovely in plum or sapphire. Her Oscar dress when she is posed with Viola Davis is lovely, maybe something like that with more color.
Oh, plum!! I can tots see that one.
I think if I were a famous actress of a certain age, like Meryl or Glen, I would be the Meryl of the group. I think dressing is so hard at this age — you don’t want to show too much skin, yet you want to be relevant (well, I would. Not sure Meryl really cares, which makes me adore her even more).
We should play your game with ourselves, Sherri. Dress us for the Oscars!
I would take Octavia Spencer’s GG gown, only in a darker color, maybe eggplant. Yes, that would work. All right, JFL, I will find something for the rest of you.
Helen Mirren is “of a certain age” as well and she almost always looks kick-ass at the awards ceremonies. I think Meryl needs a new stylist. Or maybe she doesn’t have one to begin with? She’s so attractive–she just needs a little help. I think Emma Stone’s stylist is a genius. She always looks perfect and completely put together–and totally relaxed about it all.
I was just going to say the same Jacquie!!!! Helen Mirren always looks so fabulous. She was kick ass in Red.
Helen Mirren is always kick ass, yes. No doubt Jacquie could whip Meryl right into shape.
Yes, I believe Jacquie could moonlight as par excellance stylist to the stars.
I would put Jacquie in a slightly more grown up version of Haillee Steinfeld’s Princessy Marchesa dress from last year’s Oscars: http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/oscars/photos/0,,20459085_20469421_20917427,00.html
Nice choice for Miss Jacquie
Okay, how about this for Julia, maybe in a deeper, richer hue? I think it would flatter. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/07/oscars-2010-red-carpet-ph_n_489312.html#s72725&title=Anna_Hendricks
And I can totally see Julie Kenner in something edgy and fresh, like this one:

Never mind! Found the gown, and I would totally wear that
OH! Thank you, Sherri! I LOVED that dress and would have picked the grown-up version for myself. Or the stunning Marchesa princess gown Olivia Wilde wore (and later worn by Jennifer Hudson).
Kathleen O’Reilly would look like hot stuff in this, on Helen Mirren:

Oh, here we go! For Dee- we’re very into Downton Abbey right now, so I would give her an Edwardian inspired gown like Kate Winslet in Titanic, love it!

OK, so which Whine Sis gets to arrive in this little number?

Haha, VB! I thought of that one for Julie K, but wasn’t sure she would appreciate my vision. But, she has the bod for it, and the color would be smoking hot on her.
Wait, wait, which one for me? There’s a whole slide show when I click the link….
I’ve always loved that gown. Watched Titanic the other night and thought how much I liked it. Another gown I saw too, recently, but now I can’t remember where…Oh, on January Jones for, I think, the episode where Betty and Don go out for Valentine’s Day. But I might be misremembering.
I love the color gun-metal.
I think it would be great with your hair. Maybe an updo. You know Jacquie will get after us if we don’t have Oscar hair.
I haven’t seen Red, but I recently saw her in Debt. Great movie, and–no surprise–Helen was kick-ass. I really love her. Her and Meryl–the “Certain Age Dream Team!”
Yay, Jacquie! I knew you would like your gown. You can wear Olivia’s to the after parties. (that one is amazing, too– I know which one you mean).
Meryl Streep is such a lovely and elegant lady. The right dress, in a deep jewel tone would be stunning.
Yes! I really want to see Meryl look spectacular on her big night.
I agree–I want her to look absolutely fabulous. Sherri–maybe she’d hire you and me to style her!
All about the dresses!! Although I find it funny to listen to several ‘fashion’ specialists disagree about who was the best & worst…
The experts usually do not agree with me on three out of five dresses. I love it when they all disagree, too.
