Downton Abby

by Dee Davis on January 24, 2012

I am completely and totally in love with Downton Abby.  I discovered series 1 in December, through a recommendation of a woman I met in a cooking class.  And immediately went home and glommed all seven episodes.   It was amazing.  And I was in love.  I actually counted the days until the premiere of the second series, jealous (as always actually) of people living in England because they’d already seen it and even had a Christmas Downton Abby special.

According to Mark Berman and the New York Times (in separate reporting) Downton Abby is a bringing some of PBS’s highest ratings.  People are watching the show in record numbers.  Even having ‘theme’ inspired viewing parties.   I haven’t gone that far.  But I can’t remember the last time I was so distraught when a television program ended for the evening.  SEVEN long days before another episode.  And because it’s British TV, there aren’t that many episodes to begin with.

What is it about period pieces that are so appealing.  I absolutely love them.  Not every single one, and interestingly not every single period.  But if it’s English you can most likely count me in.   (In fact, now that I think on it, I also love English comedies, As Time Goes By, To the Manor Born,  Good Neighbors…but that’s another post).  I count the BBC versions of Jane Austen’s novels as some of the very best.   And I recently watched Cranford and Return to Cranford, with Judy Dench, and was totally besotted.  And went through a box of Kleenex.  I even have a special shelf for my BBC DVDs.

But there’s something even more compelling than usual about Downton Abby.  Maybe it’s the Upstairs, Downstairs (another brilliant BBC series) nature of the story.  Or maybe it’s the time period.  Or the characters.   What’s not to love about Maggie Smith as the matriarch, and her fabulous one liners.  Or Elizabeth McGovern and her gentle nature and backbone of steel (although she really needs to watch her back when it comes to Miss O’Brian. )   And of course we’ve got romance.

Matthew and Lady Mary, who may or may not ever get together.  But who I am growing to love more and more every episode.  And Mr. Bates and Anna, the star-crossed lovers who never seem to find the right moment.  And I fear are still far from the happiness they seek.   And then there’s Sybil and her fight for women’s rights.  It’s interesting to watch her pulled between her independence and a family she truly loves.   And although initially I didn’t like Edith, the middle daughter, she too has grown on me.  Along with the Earl and Matthew’s formidable mother.  The scene this week between Isobel and Cora was priceless.

And perhaps best of all we’ve got the parallel lives of those living above stairs and those living below.  The parallel most telling when watching the Earl, the head of his family at least for the time being, and Carson, the butler, head of the staff below stairs.   Their journey through a world changing faster than is often possible to cope, is an integral part of what makes the series so compelling.

So what about you?   Are you watching Downton Abby?  Do you like period dramas?  The BBC?  What are some of your favorite shows?  Favorite characters?  Why are BBC dramas often more fun than their American cousins?

And for another blast from the past, the third novel in my time travel trilogy has been re-released.  The Promise is now available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Smashwords.

Love DA but also am a fan of the Masterpiece Theater club and most BBC productions. Hugh Bonnevile, Maggie Smith, Jim Carter/Mr. Carson (Cranford series), Brendan Coyle/Mr. Bates (Larkrise to Candleford or North and South) and Judith Dentch are all members as are many more that one sees over and over again on the great BBC productions. My vote this week for most diabolical are: O’Brian (Siobhan Finneran) and Thomas (Rob James-Collier) and most lovely are Anna and Bates.
Trivia for those awaiting the second season of “Sherlock” Of course it’s a good series–the main writer for series is Stephen Moffit who is also the head writer of the DR WHO (I love MATT SMITH) and also wrote the screenplay “The Adventures of Tin-Tin”

Did not know that about Sherlock and Dr. WHo… although I’m sure my daughter must have told me.

I love Downton Abbey. I am obsessed with Anna and Bates. They were my favorite from the first season. In the first season I didn’t really care for Mary and Edith. I found them both childish and deceitful, but I am liking them both more and more this season. I love the Dowager. I think she is hilarious.

I admit I have not watched an episode of DA yet. -holds head in shame, shame, SHAME I tell ya- Everyone raves about it so I guess I need to check it out. My favourite series will have to be Rome though. I love the boldness of the characters. I also really enjoyed the BBC version of the Pride and Prejudice.
Here in Britain, we have the real castles and stately manor homes so making certain scenes must be more believable. I must admit I love going to locations where things have been made and admiring them. My favourite is Chatsworth in Derbyshire (pronounced dur-BEH-sure btw) which has been used for several movies and shows. The Duchess and the Pride and Prejudice movie with Keira Knightly were filmed there.
As for characters, since I have not seen your DA I will have to choose another and that would be the divine Mark Antony from Rome. Jason Purefoy is just a scrumptious deviant devil (who is not ashamed to be naked btw). -clears throat-
Congrats on the re-release of the Promise!

Thanks Ti! And no worries (see there I used it properly) about DA –it’ll be fun to glom when you have some time. That’s the way I did the first series. And yes, how wonderful to get to visit all the homes. i’ll have to check out Rome. Jason Purefoy sounds familiar to me. Must go look him up.

(and Ironclad) But I must warn you, watch Rome with a good bottle of chocolate wine and no kids. I think it should be rated X in some scenes!

just finished glomming Game of Thrones. Same warning applies. But oh was if magnificent (and sad).

We do not have Sky Atlantic here which is the only place to see Game of Thrones. But I have seen them. The books are vastly better. I read 2 of them in one weekend! I just could not put them down!

I think the books are often the better (the Horse Whisperer being an exception) And I’d actually like to read the books. My daughter loved them, but the length overwhelms me. (This from the woman who once read the Lord of the Rings trilogy in a long weekend and just spent seven hours watching the first series for GOT)

I felt the same way — but in a sense I think we’re watching them grow up. Edith, Sybil and Mary.

I adore this show! Did you see the special before hand, about the Manor? I haven’t watched yet, but will probably today. Even my husband is enjoying the show. And in May, Sherlock starts again. On Sunday afternoons they have been showing a lot of Jane Austen Masterpiece productions and I have loved them all. I know on our PBS website, signing up for their newsletter got me 15% off my first purchase from their catalog, which I took advantage of. I can’t wait for Sundays. Superbowl Sunday though I will have to DVR it.

No I missed the show about the house. WIll watch to see if it’s rerun. That would be so interesting.

Ohhh… Glad to hear about the recommendation. I just finished watching Homeland (really cool!) and am now ready to find something new to glom all at once. :)

I love the period pieces, but I’d prefer to glom them rather than wait, only because the drama is usually slower and it’s hard to get caught up in the story.

AND I LOVE MAGGIE SMITH!

I’ve heard that someone came up with a Sh*t Dowager Countesses Say blog or twitter, not sure which. She does have some fantastic lines.

Homeland was awesome. Really well written I thought. Will be interesting to see where they take us next season. Thought Claire Danes was superb.

Ooh, I just caught up with the latest episode. I just want Mary and Matthew to get it together! And Anna and Bates. Drama drama drama! I love it. Edith is somewhat redeemed for me now. I wonder if Daisy is starting to really change her mind on William?

Dee Davis Dee Davis January 24, 2012 at 11:09 am

She sort of looks as if she might have (Daisy). And I cried when Matthew walked into the room. But sigh… they only talked about Lydia and Sir Richard. ICK.

Lavinia. Yes. So concerned about sparing poor Lavinia some heartache, blech. I hope she turns out to be a miserable slut and we can end up hating her anyway. Heh heh heh.

Dee Davis Dee Davis January 24, 2012 at 12:36 pm

I must have been channeling Lydia in Pride and Predjudice. Lavina…although I did kind of like that she hadn’t slept with Richard and that Mary let it slide. Made Mary the better character for it.

I haven’t seen the show, but you’ve convinced me that I need to put it on my viewing schedule. Sounds fantastic.

Added bonus: Maggie Smith. She is one of the all time greats. Makes me want to go rent some of her earlier works and watch them again.

I have this on my Nexflix queue and am looking forward to watching it. I LOVE all those British period dramas. Last one I saw was the Forsyte Saga and I loved it. Also enjoyed Wives and Daughters, as well as Cranford–there’s a whole slew of them on Netflix. One of the best was North and South (not the American one about the Civil War starring Patrick Swayze, although I liked that one, too).

Dee Davis Dee Davis January 24, 2012 at 11:07 am

Heard North and South was good. Loved the John Jakes movies with Patrick Swayze and Genie Francis, too.

I love DA too. Both series and the Christmas special. Can I just second Kwana’s mention of Sherlock.! Not period drama, quite the opposite actually but superb writing and acting. Two series so far, each one only three episodes, so not much to catch up. it really is brilliant.

Dee Davis Dee Davis January 24, 2012 at 11:06 am

My daughter recommended it too and since it follows Downton Abby it makes it easy to remember. Do I need to start at the beginning?

Kwana January 24, 2012 at 8:57 am

I’m watching and I love it too. I can’t wait to see what happens with Mary and Matthew and I’m such a Mr. Bates fan. I also can’t wait for Sherlock to come back though I have a while I think. Months and months.

It totally is. Worth glomming. You can get the first season on Netflix. Only seven hours so not the kind of commiitment as say The Wire. Going to glom Game of Thrones next.

I love Downton Abbey, too. Somehow, I knew about it the first go around, but I wish I had seen it again before second season started.

Dee, I love period films, too. All of them. I love reading period fiction, and I love writing it. I don’t know what that means about me.

Of course the downside to loving British programming is that we have to wait for it to be released. Felt that way about Lost in Austen.
