I had been reading a lot of angsty, dysfunctional family type books (The Castaways by Elin Hilderbrand being the most recent) but won a book by Phillipa Gregory, so I am reading The White Queen and will follow it with The Red Queen. These two books are about the War of the Roses in fifteenth century England.
It has been so long since I read an historical novel, I forgot how much I enjoy them. These are the type of books I gravitate toward–sweeping historical sagas, or dysfunctional, unfaithful, rotten-kid novels.
What does that say about me, I wonder?
What is your reading pleasure?

I just got the latest by Peter F. Hamilton called: The Evolutionary Void. Large-scale space opera science-fiction at its best…
I’m just about to read The Taming of Mei Lin by Jeannie Lin. I love unusual historicals. Lately I’ve been really into dark, angsty, sensuous historicals – like Libertine’s Kiss by Judith James and Seize the Fire by Laura Kinsale (which I just read for the first time).
Perhaps sometime soon I’ll swing back to reading funny contemporaries, but I’m feeling moody.
Oooh, Laura Kinsale. That sounds really good
I actually have both of those Phillipa Gregory books and haven’t read them yet–am looking forward to doing so. Not getting any reading done right now–just writing. Unless you count the National Enquirer–I read that yesterday.
I have been accumulating reading material, too. I want to read both of the Philippa Gregory books you mention. I just finished Best Friends Forever by Jennifer Weiner (good) and I’m reading Star Island by Carl Hiassen (funny). But I’m ready to tear into an epic historical. I love reading everything and books are so tempting!
I read BFF, too, and while I am a huge Jennifer Weiner fan, I found the plot of that book to be a little on the absurd side.
I want to read Star Island!
Star Island is really a hoot so far. Enjoying it. Yes, the BFF book was a tad far-fetched and some of it worked out a little too easily in the end, but I still found it easy vacation reading. (Read it on the plane to and from Disney World, so I was in a forgiving, light-hearted mood).
I went to BN the other day to pick up something for Hubot, and ended up spending $60 on a new stack of books. To add to the stack I already have! Which doesn’t include my kindle books! I want a week where I have nothing to do but lie around and read. I am trying to think of some surgery I need, LOL
Julia, I’m sure you were kidding, but I had gall bladder surgery a couple of years ago. I lay in the bed for about 10 days and read books. Plus I had all my meals brought to me in bed! Not a bad experience over all lol!
I was and I wasn’t. It almost has to be surgery to keep me from getting up and doing something else other than reading.
I’ve never had that problem. If I could get away with it, I could read ALL the time. Not a very healthy, balanced relationship I have with books
.
You probably don’t waste a lot of time watching Bridezillas. That can cut into reading time, lol. I think because I write all day, I feel like I should be doing things around the house instead of reading more. But somehow I manage to get it in because I would be a lump of clay without reading.
TV doesn’t really take up a lot of time during the summer. Well, except for White Collar. If I was still in 6th grade, I’d be writing Mrs. Matt Bomer all over everything
! This fall when all the new episodes start up it’s a little different. But I usually still have a book in my hand and read during commercials lol.
hahahaa!
I used to love those kinds of books too! My goal after this book is finished is to READ — it’s just been so long since I’ve been able to glom books. Looking forward to the chance to catch up on the growing pile on my bedside table.
