Fashion Friday: Emmy 2010

by Sherri Browning Erwin on September 3, 2010

Basic, but not boring. Great color on Jane Lynch.

In hieroglyphics, Tina's dress says "should have stuck to basic black."

Love the yellow, and the way Sofia Vergara dressed her curves.

Love the purple, but not so loving the way Christina Hendricks dressed her curves. She has looked better.

Desperately in need of curves, Lea Michelle. Was she always this thin?

Julia Ormond, Jacquie and I will probably agree that she needs to do something with her hair.

Mr. Right is always happy to see Jewel. Too lacy?

Worst Dressed Couple, Modern Family's Ty Burrell and wife.

Claire Danes, all blonde and sparkly, looking good.

Rita Wilson, all sparkly, and not so good. Worst Dressed?

Who is your pick for best and worst dressed at the Emmys?

Gladiatrix Anna Paquin. Is that a word? Gladiatrix? Whatever, not a good look.

Maybe Heidi could have added a few inches to the skirt? And why does her hair look painted down?

Julia Louis Dreyfus, a safe choice but she looks good. Hair up, bonus. Great earrings.

The previously mentioned January Jones

The impeccable Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt

Glenn Close and Daughter, in need of a second fitting?

My favorite of the night, Maura Tierney. Great color, beautiful fit, classic style.

Heidi Klum — no, just no.
Julie Louis Dreyfus — I approve. Flattering, tasteful, elegant.
January Jones — another winner. Full of panache and she seems to be working it.
Rita Wilson has no head.
Leah Michele — love the flouncy bottom. I love those sorts of dresses.
And I am surprised at how very nice Jane Lynch looks. I’m used to seeing her in gym suits. :)

If January didn’t show up with bedhead, I might give her some credit for at least a different dress in a great color, even if the top does remind me of cocktail umbrellas (not always a bad thing). Rita, LOL. Hair slicked back is not her best look. If the ladies had traded hair…? Hm. I do like Lea’s dress, but so thin. And she was posing like she was battling it out to be America’s Next Top Model for Tyra Banks. Broken down rag doll pose over and over (yes, addicted to the show, know the poses). Miss Jay would be proud.

I love January Jone’s dress. I also love her name :)

I love Tina Fey’s dress. I think Jane Lynch looked like she was wearing a bridesmaid dress. Claire Danes looked wonderful

One more–Heidi Klum.
No. Just…no. She looks like she’s trying out for a guest spot on Gossip Girl. I think that dress would MAYBE look good on a 17 year old. Maybe. And I agree with Sherri. Her hair look glued on.
My motto is this–if the dress doesn’t look good on a freakin’ SUPERMODEL, it won’t look good on you.

Adding a link to my go-to fashion source so you can check out some of the dresses Jacquie mentioned that I didn’t have room for:
http://gofugyourself.celebuzz.com/go_fug_yourself/2010/08/emmy_awards_cheat-sheet.html

Of interest- Susan Sarandon (fabulous), Lauren Graham (ick). Padma Lakshmi (meh). Kim Kardashian (pretty)- and the trend to lacy or layered dresses, see Dianna Agron, Emily Deschanel. (I’m torn on those two, and Jewel, like them or over the top?).

Oh, forgot about Lauren Graham. Egads! Really, really bad. Don’t these people have mirrors? Or friends? Is there no one brave/honest enough to say to them, “Listen, that’s just not your best look, maybe you should try on something else?”
Just because a garment has a designer name on it doesn’t mean it’s 1) pretty, or 2) flattering on you (See Prada).

Oh, man, where do I begin?? I seriously cannot recall an award ceremony with a higher percent of really horrible dresses. My best dressed is Claire Danes. I’m not crazy about her (that whole homewrecking thing), but I love the dress and she wore it well. My other best dressed is someone you don’t have pictured here–Susan Sarandon. She wore a beautiful, age-appropriate dress. Yes, it was black, but she looked elegant, stylish, classy, and perfect from head to toe.
Rita Wilson. Yikes. Hate all of it–the hair, the make-up, the jewelry, the dress, even the shoes. Prada should be ashamed of herself.
January Jones–looks like something the Project Runway crew made on the Make A Dress From Crap from the Party City Store challenge. On a positive note, I love the color. Dress–bad. Shoes–bad (with that dress). And oh, yeah–brush your hair.
Julia Ormond–Hadn’t seen her before this–yes, please borrow January’s brush after she uses it.
Sophia Vergara–I don’t like it. She has THE most amazing body (the one I ordered, btw, and didn’t get), but that dress didn’t MOVE with her. I can’t really explain it–it’s like SHE moved, but the dress didn’t flow with her. Maybe because she spilled hot chocolate down the front?
Christina H–like you, Sherri, I love the color, but with all those feathers she looks like a really, really, REALLY stacked Muppet. I think the girls were a little too in your face.
Lea M–She did a navy blue dress at a previous award ceremony (I forget which one) and she looked better there. And yes–she looks like she needs a hamburger.
Jewel–pretty. Love her. Not crazy about the little bow in the front, but still really cute.
Tiny Fey–Love her, hate the dress. Too dowdy, too matronly, and too tight across her hips. I don’t know who her stylist is, but she needs a new one. She’s really pretty and has a great figure. She should look fabulous.
Anna Paquin–I hate to say anything bad about Alexander McQueen (RIP), but this dress was just horrible. ‘Nuff said.
Worst Dressed for me were January, Rita, Anna, and Padma L (not shown). Too much hair, and that ridiculous necklace was…ridiculous.
Oh–also thought Kim Kardashian looked very pretty. The neckline of her Marchesa was a little heavy, but for me she had Best Hair–gorgeous updo.
Not that I have an opinion :)

That’s the really hard part, Jacquie- deciding who to show. I can only fit so many pictures in a report, but Susan Sarandon was on the good side with Kim K and Padma Lakshmi was definitely not looking her best. And showing up on a formal night with bedhead should not be allowed. You can wear your hair down and look put together- check out Jennifer Westfeldt. And yes, Claire Danes. I have issues with her, too, but that’s probably the best she has ever looked, one of the best of the night.

Well first off I adore Maura Tierney. And her post cancer hair is adorable. And her dress was lovely. I also loved Sofia Vegera’s dress although it could just be that she’s so lovely–didn’t notice the movement thing. I also (contrary to my sisters) really liked Tina Fey’s dress. I thought it was fun and looked good on her. And also unlike you guys while I thought Claire Danes’ dress was pretty, it pinched at the top and was distracting to watch her as she presented. Her skin kept folding over the top. I also liked Archie Punjabi’s dress (see the link Sherri provided). I always think Jennifer Westfeldt looks gorgeous (and Jon Hamm). And Susan Sarandon is beautiful in anything. Kristine Wiig’s dress was wild and no tin a good way. As was the already mentioned Lauren Graham. One dress I loved that you all didn’t mention was Kyra Sedgwick’s . Gorgeous, deep burgundy. Over all, loved the dominance of navy, hated the one shoulder numbers, not big on the ruffles and feathers and thought as usual some people just don’t have any taste. Simple and elegant always does it for me. Overall winner…. well it’s hard to pick one — but I’ll go with Connie Britton (of Friday Night Lights Fame) and her strapless Burberry gown (although also loved Julliana Margulies L’Wren Scott dress as well).

Interesting. We differ. Not a fan of Tina’s look (though Julia London might agree with you) and I thought Kyra looked like a scrawny old witch (though she usually looks lovely, I hated her dress on her). Kristin Wiig, was she trying to be funny/unusual? I’m not usually a one shoulder fan but I did think Jane Lynch looked great. And I love the navy and black, because that’s probably what I would wear. Navy or black.

Wel,, would have done her hair differently but really did love the dress. RE Tina, most of the world agreed with you. But for some reason I really liked it — wouldn’t wear it mind you, but liked it!!!

Sherri Browning Erwin Sherri Browning Erwin September 3, 2010 at 9:12 am

It was definitely different. Points for that.

Heard that Anna Paquin was actually leaving a trail of “gems” behind her as she walked. The dress was shedding, I guess…

Jacquie D'Alessandro Jacquie D'Alessandro September 3, 2010 at 9:53 am

Ugh–ugly AND shedding. Not good.

Jacquie D'Alessandro Jacquie D'Alessandro September 3, 2010 at 9:52 am

I didn’t watch the show, so I didn’t see Claire presenting. That dress had to weigh at least 40 pounds. If she was oozing over the top, then shame on the fitters.

Totally with you except for January. I like the dress. Very retro!

If you could borrow the dress from her, Julie, you’d be on the front page of every mag in the nation! The captions might not be flattering (because it seems you and January are the only 2 people on the plantet who loved the dress, LOL!), but still…

I think I have to give worst to Ty Burrell and wife. Rita Wilson gets off the hook. At least, she tried to have fun with it. And match. Take a look at Ty’s shoes! Has he heard of dress shoes? If you’re going to wear a cheesy gray tux, commit to the look with some gray patent leather or something.

Reply

Jacquie D'Alessandro Jacquie D'Alessandro September 3, 2010 at 7:41 am

Seriously, Sherri, what was he THINKING? He must have been fall-down drunk, blindfolded, and standing in a dark room when he got dressed. Either that, or he lost a bet.

Reply

Dee Davis September 3, 2010 at 8:39 am

Agree totally re Ty and his tuxedo. I just kept thinking fire your stylist. For though January Jones is the winner of worst dress –although I hadn’t seen Rita’s. Only saw her seated and she looked lovely then. P.S. there was a lot of Modern Family betting going around–maybe the tux was included?

Sherri Browning Erwin Sherri Browning Erwin September 3, 2010 at 8:44 am

But the shoes? Oh the shoes! Why is that getting to me? I normally don’t give a flip about men’s shoes.

Reply

Dee Davis September 3, 2010 at 9:39 am

I actually think it would be fun to talk about the men and their tuxes… Hugh Laurie looked really nice. I guess they’re all (except Ty) so much alike it’s just not the same. Think it’s interesting that in the animal world it’s the men who dress like peacocks…not the women.

Nissie September 3, 2010 at 5:23 pm

Sherri, I agree! The SHOES!? I couldn’t get past them long enough to form an opinion about anything else.

Sherri Browning Erwin Sherri Browning Erwin September 3, 2010 at 5:34 pm

Thank you Nissie! I’m not alone. I still can’t get past those shoes.

No, I can’t either!! He probably would have looked better if he had worn flip flops!
