Ch-ch-ch-changes!

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck on August 31, 2010

The crazy wheel keeps on turning...

So many changes right about now. The biggest is my new name (how’s THAT for a subtle reference to the fact that it’s release day for When Blood Calls by J.K. Beck?).

But there’s other stuff, too. We’re selling our house (which I love, but am happy to sell because we’ve outgrown it), and we’re buying a new one (that we’re building … or we’re having built).

It's a lot further along now, but I'm SO excited to no longer have a galley kitchen!

My kids are getting older. My daughter’s going to Girl Scout camp soon without me! Just the leaders and a few chaperon moms. My mother has moved to my town.

Bye little house I've known for so long!

All good stuff, but sometimes you want to kick back and yell…slow down!

That thought really jelled with me yesterday when I saw Kathleen (waving to my Whine Sister), who swung by the house with her daughter, who has grown so much since I last saw her…and she said the same thing about my kids. I mean, yeah, they’re supposed to grow, but sometimes you just want to put a hand on top of their head and say stop! Slow down!

Most of the time, though, I have to admit that the changes are exciting. I’ve always liked picking up and moving. I’ve always wanted to get started on the next adventure. Slowing down a little bit though, would be a good thing, because savoring is important, too. And Big Life Things are worth taking the time to truly enjoy. As are the crazy moments with your family.

So I’m going to hang with my mom in her new place, and I’m going to put together a “new house” scrapbook with the kids, and I’m going to drive around to the local bookstores and gaze glassy-eyed upon my book. Changes, yeah. But I’m going to enjoy them all.

How about you? Is life moving my at a clip or a snail’s pace? Any changes in your world making your head spin, or your lips curve into a smile?

what never changes is that I seem to always have a deadline. Like now.

At the moment, life (or at least some parts of it) seem to be moving by at the blink of an eye. But life is like that. On the daily level it goes by sometimes feeling like nothing is ever going to happen and then one day you wake up and years have gone. Your children are grown (or almost so) , you look in the mirror and say “what the heck?” and wonder where the time went. But then something will happen and suddenly it all seems fresh and new again. Perspective. That’s the key! Yay on the new book and series, Julie/JKB. The buzz has been amazing! And the new house looks very cool!

Thanks! And the new house is actually locked now…no more poking around and seeing the progress!

Life is going by at a frantic pace now around here. The summer whizzed right by- one fun adventure after another. And now work- work!- deadline looming and I have much to write. Kids back to school. Stuff to be done. Never ends.

But… I did enjoy a prolonged vacation with my family, and grown kids are really fun! You have much to look forward to as they grow. You do miss the little baby things, and then the little kid things, and big kid things… they all become fond fuzzy memories. But what you have then are extraordinary people that you can relate to and laugh with and admire, that you don’t have to correct or look after or guide (though you do have to resist the urge to still do that sometimes). It’s really amazing.

I’m looking forward to the new friends thing, too. Right now, our lots are SO big that we’re far away from everybody…and there are tons of kids in the new neighborhood. Glad you’re loving your new place!

Great blog, Julie (I mean JK :) ). It seems that the older I get, the faster time seems to go. And I know exactly what you mean about your kids growing fast. I swear it was only yesterday my son was a baby and now he’s 20–a grown man. We recently underwent a huge change like you’re going through now when we sold our old house, built a new one and moved. A lot of work and stress with that, but so worth it–we love our new neighborhood and are making lots of new friends.
