I was surprised to discover the clothing item that no well-dressed woman can live without this Fall season is the cape! Super heroes are in vogue again and each and every one of us should have a selection of capes to wear with our skinny jeans. Okay, I confess, I have a pair of skinny jeans. I kind of like the idea of a cape to go with them, especially if the cape is long enough, because, you know, when you wear skinny jeans, sometimes your body oozes out of the top of them and glops over the sides. A cape would be a great cover for that.
Capes were in style at some point in my life, because I remember them. I don’t remember if I had one, which makes me think probably not.
I don’t know, what do you think? Would you wear a cape this fall? Perhaps with a festive beret set at a jaunty angle on your head? (P.S. I like the one up top).

Jacquie, I think we need to do a blog on fashion klutz’s. What fashions make us look like buffoons…not because they look bad, but because we are too goofy to wear them!
Wraps, however, are easy. If I can do it, you can do it.
Last time I wore a cape –it was actually more of a poncho–I’d broken my arm and had to have it strapped to my body to heal (I’ve always sworn I’d have had bigger boobs if I hadn’t been wrapped like a mummy for a large portion of the sixth grade). My grandmother made the poncho (with tassels) so that I could cover up the ugly bandage. Don’t think a cape is in the cards for me. But I do envy people like C.C. who can carry it off. Had a Scottish friend who wore wonderful wraps and capes and always looked so stylish and elegant. Me, I’d trip on it or something!
And let me just mention, wraps are very handy in those chilly workshop rooms at writers conferences. You can fold it up and put it in your bag, put it over your lap or around your shoulders. I have two light weight pashminas for the summer months.
LOL, Julia, we’re having a total fashion miss here for me today–I can’t see myself wearing a cape OR a beret OR skinny jeans.
Bummer! xox
Well, Jacquie, you do have a point about the purse. That is problematic, and can most definitely ruin the look. I either carry my purse by the handles, or over my shoulder UNDER the cape.
I hadn’t even thought of that. Okay, must reassess the cape
I know there are women out there who can effortlessly wear that look and pull it off beautifully and look chic and gorgeous. I wish I was one of them, but I’m not. I’d be a tangled mess and with my huge purse under my cape I’d either look preggers or like I had a massive growth sticking out of my side.
I’m with you,Jacquie! Although I am working on getting into the skinny jeans without spilling over the top lol! I’ll get there someday. I think if I keep telling myself that, I’ll eventually believe it.
Of course, I’d wear a cape this fall, and yes with a beret! I have a beautiful, low hip length alpaca cape that I bought in Silverton, Colorado two years ago, and I get compliments every time I wear it. I also wear “wraps”, you know, like giant scarves that you can wrap around your shoulders with fringe that covers to mid-thigh. I have two in cashmere, one black and one burnt orange. These are very handy wardrobe items, and perfect for here in Arizona where it never gets too cold. I wear them with jeans, and with long skirts and boots.
CC, I don’t know where you are, but I live in wraps in the winter. I’m in south central Texas, and it’s never really cold enough for a coat. Light jackets are great but it’s so much easier just to throw on a wrap
I love the look of the wrap and the theory of the wrap, but I’m just too much of a klutz to wear one. I’d get all tangled up like a mummy and wouldn’t be able to find my hands, let alone my car keys or anything else, LOL!
I have to admit I’m not a cape fan and I won’t be adding one to my wardrobe. It just looks like something I’d get all tangled up in, lose my phone in, etc. And what about your purse–does it go on your shoulder INSIDE the cape (where I imagine I’d never be able to get at it) or outside the cape (where I imagine it would constantly slip off my shoulder).
