POP CULTURE MONDAY: WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING?

by Jacquie D'Alessandro on August 23, 2010

I have to say, when we first got TiVo last year, I was skeptical. It didn’t seem as if we were addicted to THAT many shows that it was really necessary. However, I quickly fell in love with TiVo when I realized I no longer had to choose between Dancing With the Stars and House on Monday nights. And I REALLY fell in love with TiVo when I realized that half of my favorite shows–Royal Pains, Vampire Diaries, The Mentalist, and Project Runway–are all on Thursday.  And starting next month, another favorite show, Big Bang Theory, is moving from Monday night to–you guessed it–Thursday night. (A note to the networks–STOP ALREADY!  There are SIX other nights of the week!  Quit piling all my favorite shows on the same night!)

I may be small, but I am mighty

As if I needed any more shows to keep up with, I’ve discovered two more (luckily/miraculously neither is on Thursday night).  They are the Rachel Zoe Project and Toddlers and Tiaras.  I like watching Rachel Zoe because as stylist to the stars, she has access to the most incredibly gorgeous clothes. Plus, I’m hoping during some episode we get to see Rachel actually sit down for a meal or get some sleep.  How she survives on a diet of caffeine and stress is beyond me.

As for Toddlers and Tiaras, it’s like an accident I can’t look away from. I watch the entire show with my jaw hanging open ($1500 for a dress for a THREE YEAR OLD???  $800 for a bathing suit for a four year old?? Spray tans and fake teeth for toddlers??).

No, she's not 25 years old. She's FOUR.

There are also some shows I’ve given up on.  I’m disgusted with the petty bickering and nastiness on the Housewives of New Jersey.  Enough already.  I haven’t even tuned in to the D.C. Housewives and have no intention of doing so.  I found Jersey Shore entertaining last season (I’m ashamed to say), but this season has really grossed me out, so I’m done.  I used to love Two and a Half Men, but now it just seems somehow…sad, so good-bye Charlie Harper and crew.  It was fun while it lasted.

Peace out, Jersey Shore gang. We're done.

What have you been watching this summer?  What shows are you looking forward to in the new fall season?  Any shows you used to love but have now given up on?  What about buying full seasons of shows on DVD’s—do you have any?  If so, which ones?

I totally and completely gave up on Lost, long before it ended. But I’m still watching way too many shows to keep track of. White Collar is well-written and funny. Haven, because it’s (very, very, very loosely) based on a Stephen King story. True Blood and The Gates (because I love the supernatural and thus also looking forward to Vamp Diaries). Eureka because I’m a gadget freak and The Secret Life of the American Teenager even though I don’t know why I follow that (still hilarious that it is shown on ABC Family given the subject matter).

Hey Jacquie, it’s been a while. This summer I have been watching a lot of Law & Order: SVU reruns, Bones, Cold Case, Burn Notice, Army Wives (I missed the finale because the cable wasn’t working. I have to see it though.) Rizzoli & Isles is a pretty good one…love Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander. I have also been watching NCIS reruns….the USA network is my friend this summer. That’s about it. I hope you are all having a wonderful day.

Oh, there is a new show coming, but it will be on Mondays. Not sure how I am going to pull off watching that…it’s about a female US Marshall, I think it’s called Chase. Castle is on that night too, and the only way I could watch it is if the new show comes on at a different time. I don’t have TiVo or DVR.

Peace and love,
Paula R.

Hey Paula–great to see you here! I’ve seen a few episodes of Castle and really liked it. It’s on my “buy the entire season on DVD” list. I also like the USA network. I LOVE Royal Pains. I started watching it because it takes place in the Hamptons, and I’m from Long Island. Love the characters and the writing. I’ve also seen a few episodes of Psych, which I thought were really funny. I’ve heard Rizzoli and Isles is good, but haven’t seen it yet.

Jacquie, I forgot you were from “strong island, Long Island”…LOL!!! I do catch Royal Pains, The Closer and some Psych every now and then too. I also caught a couple episodes of Leverage, which is pretty cool. You should totally check out R&I.

Peace and love,
Paula R.

I’m with you on the Tivo/DVR thing (use the cable’s DVR, but I do love it). I think it’s marvelous to watch a show when you decide it’s time. Not to mention, skipping commercials.

As for our current TV watching, we have been obsessively watching Criminal Minds. I love that show, and so does my family. It is very sad that we bond over blood, guts, and serial killers, but hey, this is America.

I haven’t been watching much other TV this summer. Not a big fan of reality TV, I don’t know why, but it always bores me (except for American Idol, which is technically reality TV, but obviously works for me. Again, don’t know why).

In the fall, there are a few things I’m looking forward to. House, Criminal Minds. I’ll give L&O: LA a chance, but I am skeptical.

I’ve never seen Criminal Minds, but decided I’d best give it a pass when the commercials for it scared me, LOL!
I’m behind on House, but I love that show. Hugh Laurie is just ridiculously great in that role.

Not for the weak of heart, definitely, and the writers milk it for all it’s worth. It’s interesting to me, because the pacing is similar to that in a horror movie, which is why I think we like it. :)

I totally watch too much TV. Lost two shows last year– 24 and Lost–so you’d think TV life would have slowed down. But no… there’s always something new and intriguing. Looking forward to the new season — but sadly that means a couple of new summer shows will be coming to an end. Really enjoying Rookie Blues and Covert Affairs. But will be glad to start up again with House, Parenthood and The Good Wife. Not to mention Gray’s Anatomy and Private Practice. Oh and Modern Family. See what I mean? Too many shows. Last year Monday night was my TV overload night — but hopefully this year will be better. New Show I’m looking forward to is the remake of Hawaii 5-0. And show I gave up on — both Law and Order SVU and CSI (in all versions). Just got tired of the ‘ick’ factor.

I’m also looking forward to checking out the new Hawaii 5-0. Book ‘em, Dano! We never missed an episode of that show when I was a kid.
I like Modern Family alot and also like The Middle (clearly I’m with you, Dee, on the “too many shows” train!). I also gave up on SVU–it was too depressing. Another show I quit was CSI:Miami. When they got rid of Eric (my fave character) I was done.

Oh! But Eric came back! (Also… he was in an episode of Psych recently… just sayin’! : ) )

Reality shows all the way, with a few dramas like Mad Men (JK Beck, I agree. I keep waiting for something to happen), Entourage (ooops…missed it again last night. Hooray for HBO on Demand!). I also watch Flipping Out, Rachel Zoe, Project Runway, Toddlers and Tiaras, and the Housewives franchise. And of course I watched the Deadliest Catch all season. LOVE that show!

I can’t believe how my viewing habits have changed. I used to watch nothing. Then I would watch a couple of shows like The Office. Then, when I hit menopause, I started watching all the trash TV. It’s like background noise. I can be working on a book or doing something else and just hear the chatter and not really have to pay attention.

That’s funny, Julia–I can’t have the tv on at all when I’m working. I need silence. If the tv was on, I’d start typing what the people on the show were saying, LOL!

I’m watching more TV than I usually do — sigh. Mad Men (though I’m not as thrilled with this season than the previous; here’s hoping it picks up) and Entourage (still love this show), and Flipping Out. I did watch the DC Housewives, but won’t go back; didn’t find the gals interesting. I will watch NYC when it starts up again. And I’m watching The Vampire Diaries and trying to catch up before the new season starts!

Don’t you just love the Vampire Diaries?!? Next season looks like it’s going to be incredible with Katherine coming back. Trouble with a capital T!
