QUESTION OF THE WEEK: SUMMER OR SCHOOL?

by Jacquie D'Alessandro on August 14, 2010

I love living in Georgia, but one thing I’ve never been crazy about is the fact that school starts here in early to mid-August.  Yuck!

But there are 3 weeks of summer left!

I grew up in New York and we didn’t start school until after Labor Day.  Granted, we had to go to school until the end of June (kids get out here before Memorial Day), but I still like that New York schedule better.  I mean, summer isn’t over until after Labor Day!  When kids go back to school here, there are still three to four weeks of summer left!  Weeks to spend at the beach, by the pool, sleeping late, playing outside, hanging with friends, going to matinees, riding bikes, running through the sprinklers–all those great summertime kid things.

So my question this week is:  When did your school start and finish?  Which do you prefer–the early August thru late May timetable, or early September thru late June?  (okay, that’s two questions—sorry!) And here’s one more—how is your summer going so far?  Whatcha been up to? (okay, once again, that’s two! Sorry, LOL!)

Okay, so I’m late to the party, but I LOVE starting early August and ending before Memorial Day (live here in GA). My daughters are getting bored and ready for school by the end of July. Plus, I like having the breaks during the year. We don’t like to travel in the summer, so traveling in Sept. or February during breaks works for us.

Jacquie, my kids started back to school on August 2. The day AFTER I arrived home from RWA!!!! UGH! They have already completed 2 weeks of school and the projects and fundraisers have started. I’m so ready for fall break!!

August 2nd?!? That’s just insane. My sympathies, Buffie.

That really is crazy, Buffie! That’s the middle of the summer :(

Thanks for the sympathies, VB!

Jacquie, yes it is NUTS!!!! And the viruses have already started the rounds at school. My youngest was home sick yesterday with some nasty tummy bug.

Did I already say I’m ready for fall break?

We are on the late August-end of May. But when VB and I were kids, it was an after labor day start. I don’t know why it changed.

Personally, I’ll be glad when summer is over. VB, pass the rain.

I’m embarrassed to say I don’t even remember. I think it started out after Labor Day and crept in closer and closer. The man o’ the house works at a school, and they start back next Tuesday. I started my own kiddoes back yesterday (albeit with “school lite”) but I school year round, with July being off. That way there is no guilt when Mommy sluffs off on the schooling for conference or deadline! (But of course that means the kids get more sprinkler, bug-chasing, pool time than their schoolhouse-bound kids, so I am guilt free!)

Julia, I would gladly have given you at least half of the rain. It was one of those weird storms that just sat over our town (ONLY our town) the entire time.

Has your area had much rain this summer or has it just been the horrific heat and humidity?

Julie, I home school, also. I had planned to start back next week, but I still don’t have all my curriculum together. Help!

Cool! I didn’t know you homeschooled. My curriculum is in little piles at the moment. Like I said, we’re starting slow :) What grade/s are you doing?

One child, but multiple grade levels. He’s 10 (last week) and has severe ADHD, so we have everything from 3rd through 6th grade level going this year. What about yours?

Ours is late August through end of May. That’s what I’m used to, so that’s what I prefer. California started late and went through late June, but I swear that there was a school holiday every other week.

I’ve had a fantastic summer, but the heat is wearing on my nerves. Last night we received nearly 4 inches of rain in about 90 minutes. Insane. My garage and utility room flooded, but it’s OK now. I was whining at the time, but I guess I received a great workout for my arms and core by sweeping, mopping and wiping for a couple of hours. LOL

Our vacation is in a couple of weeks. Yaaaayyyy.

So sorry about your flood, VB! That’s exactly what happened here, just weeks after we moved in–4 inches of rain in 2 hours. Entire basement flooded. The only silver lining is the clean-up calorie burn, LOL!
Hope you enjoy your vacation. Where are you headed?

The cooooler weather of the mountains!! Can’t wait.

Yeah, Jacquie, I definitely received a great workout. After I finished the flood cleanup, my child stopped up the toilet. More work for those arms and core. Hahaha.

We’re on Sept-June schedule here. At first it was hard for me to get used to (coming from Texas which is early August to May) And we always had a long Christmas break — which we don’t have here. But now after seven years of it — I can’t imagine any other way. We love having a late August vacation. Off to college tour number three next week…

I grew up the northeast schedule, and even though my son went through his entire school career on the southern schedule, I never got used to it–it just never felt right. Especially when it’s like 100 degrees in Georgia in August!
Where will college tour number 3 be taking you?

Massachusetts. Four schools for certain and maybe a fifth. Starting with Clark.

Oh I much prefer the northeast schedule of Sept-June. Really, after Memorial Day, it’s all fun anyway. Well, okay, finals are not fun, but there’s plenty of fun to be had. I would have a hard time with changing to the August-May schedule, just because I’m used to Sept-June. But I know some school systems have no long summer break and more breaks in between, which is kind of cool, too. Allows for family travel when the popular family travel destinations are not crazy crowded.

We always had a week off in February which was really nice–it broke up that long stretch between the Christmas holiday and spring break. Here in Georgia the kids got a LOT of three day weekends (either Monday or Friday off)–it seems like they had at least one every month, which was really just a pain in the neck. You can’t really go anywhere for a 3 day weekend–it’s not enough time. I would have preferred a solid week off instead of all that “a day here, a day there.”
But then, the school board didn’t ask me, LOL!
