Question of the Week: What’s on Your Spring Cleaning List?

by Julia London on March 6, 2010

Just like that, the skies turned blue, birds started chirping, and the temperature finally climbed into the sixties and seventies.  It’s spring!  And every spring, I start looking at my closet of sweaters and furry house shoes and dude, I have some serious closet cleaning that needs to be done. What is that?  Is it a biological thing that makes me want to clear out clutter and throw open the windows?  Does spring do that to you?

What do you want to accomplish this spring?  Closets?  Drawers?  Kitchen? Bedroom?  Garage?  Something different altogether? Tell me your spring cleaning of flinging plans.

This isn’t really Spring cleaning but more like Spring sprucing! Now that I have been staring at the walls of my house for 4 months, I keep coming up with new paint colors! We have already painted the powder room orange and the living/kitchen/eating area a nice light sage/mint green!

So my next tasks are the 2 story foyer, upstairs hallway and master bathroom :) And our son wants to change his BRIGHT orange room to a light gray!

I want to paint, too, but with a three year old and a new puppy on the way, there doesn’t seem to be a point.

Yup–you might as well plan on waiting to paint until 2018, LOL!

I think because I moved a lot as a kid, my idea of spring cleaning is to move. But since that isn’t in the cards (I hope) until next year…. I’ll settle for cleaning out the closet.

Hahaha! I like that idea, Dee. Just move every spring.

I have a room in the back that I want to tackle. It’s turned into a large room-sized closet and needs to be turned back into a room, but it’s probably a complete weekend project to get it done. Other than that, my spring cleaning is usually focused on things that stress me out. Dusty baseboards, dust bunnies, dusty counters…. I’m sensing a trend. Obviously dust stresses me out. Since I’m allergic to dust, I wonder if this is a survivalist mechanism. Probably not, but it’s a fun thought.

It’s finally in the forties here. Woo! I’ve got to do the house. Normally, I tend to focus on what shows. Closets, aren’t they the place where you shove all the clutter you don’t want guests to see? Or is that my son’s room while he’s away at college? He’ll be home for break soon, so I have to get busy. I have to do the yard, clearing brush and leaves and cleaning gutters. I’m going to bathe my dogs. That’s always a treat for us all. And then, as VB says, yeah, I have to upgrade the workouts. Spring fun.

Ooh, forgot one! I also need to upgrade the workouts. My arms are not sleeveless ready. Come to think of it, I better focus more on the hips, too. And the waist. Thighs. Calves.

Ugh. Was thinking that same thing yesterday. And it doesn’t help that I have a sister who is a jock who has great great arms.

Although I could answer “all of the above,” I’m ready to focus on closets and dresser drawers. And, I am definitely in a tossing mood.

Also, I’m ready to buy/plant flowers, but that will have to wait a few more weeks.

I am determined to do it sometime this spring. I. will. do. this. thing.

Can’t wait for flowers!!! I had a raised bed garden last year that did very well. Hoping to add another square this year. After this blustery, blizzardy winter, I’m so ready for spring!

Ooooh, that makes me want to smack you, Jacquie! If I had all the time in the world, I would go from room to room and completely redo it all. Out with the old, get rid of the clutter, new paint, new drapes, new rugs!

Instead, I think I’ll buy some new chairs for the living room.

I remember when I was growing up my mom would do a full spring AND fall cleaning–scrubbing EVERYTHING top to bottom. TWICE a year. How is that even possible??

Impossible. Flat out impossible. Ask her what drugs she was taking and order us some.

We did that, too. I remember those days when the curtains were taken down, the rugs were beaten, and the windows were opened to air out the house. Man, we were stupid.

I can’t believe I’m actually writing this, but I have nothing left to spring clean because it’s all done. But before Julia throws furry house shoes at me, it’s only all done because 1) my house is up for sale, so it HAD to be done, and 2) I started spring cleaning LAST spring. Yes, it took a year, but I’m proud to say every wall is painted, every closet cleaned, the basement and garage organized, every surface polished and shined. It looks so great in here, I’m starting to think I’m crazy to move, LOL!

That’s awesome, Jacquie. I don’t hate you for it. I. don’t. hate. you. at. all.

OK, hate has passed. I remember the hell of house-selling, so now sympathy has set in. Fingers crossed you get it sold soon.
