“I heard them say that today’s the day,
What day, you say?
Seuss’s Birthday!”
“Okay, I ponder, but why should I care, why should I bother? A birthday’s not rare.”
“But he’s the great Dr. Seuss, the cleverest of all, more witty than Franklin, more funny than Ball!”
“So you tell me, but I do not see. I don’t think he’s funny, not funny to me.”
“The Cat in the hat! It’s a classic you know.”
“Lolita’s a classic. Some cat is not that.”
“I do not know what you have against rhymes.”
“I don’t mind the rhymes, but it’s a big waste of time.”
“I’m wasting my time, to show you the light, Dr. Seuss is a legend.”
“You may be right.”
Oh, fine, go ahead, and blow on your tweeters, unwrap your figglers, and dance with your skeelers. I, me, will toil and keep my head down. I am a worker, not some bookish clown.”
“Only a clown would deny himself green eggs and ham–”
“Green eggs and ham??! Green eggs and ham?”
“You’ve heard of dish?”
“Heard?” I scoffed. “Green eggs and ham? Slathered with Jam. I love them, I do, or my name is not Sam.”
With apologies to good poets everywhere. Today is Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Favorite Seuss book and favorite line?
My fav is There’s A Wocket in My Pocket, and my fav line is: “A person’s a person, no matter how small.” (because Horton is my second fav Seuss book.)
In honor of YOU, dear readers, because we love you and we haven’t given anything away in the longest time, we’re giving away a Kindle Fire (or the gift card equivalent, in the event you have or don’t want a Kindle Fire) to one lucky commenter from now until February 13, when we will choose a winner at random from commenters, to be announced on Valentine’s Day.

Now, the Star-Belly Sneetches
Had bellies with stars.
The Plain-Belly Sneetches
Had none upon thars.
The Sneetches and Other Stories — including Yurtle the Turtle (I named mine after him). But I also love the Grinch (the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day). The Lorax (I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees) Saw an exhibit once with the original artwork for that book — amazing. And of course — Green Eggs and Ham (Will you want them here or there? Will you want them anywhere?)
Okay… I’d admit it, I’m a Seussophile!
LOL. Forgot about the sneetches…
“When beetles fight these battles in a bottle with their paddles
and the bottle’s on a poodle and the poodle’s eating noodles…
…they call this a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle
bottle paddle battle.”
— Dr. Seuss (Fox in Socks)
Hop on Pop, a favorite around here. And Fox in Socks. As well as Red Fish, Blue Fish, and the Alphabet Book. I read them so many times to my babies that I had them memorized. Oh and Mr. Brown Can Moo… Can You?
I love driving to Easthampton from Holyoke (my birth town), because you go over Mount Tom, the inspiration for the Grinch’s Mountain into Whoville (Easthampton in the valley below– I have a picture, Kathleen, do you want me to post it?). Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss. was born in the neighboring city of Springfield MA, on Mulberry Street. We have many statues and local tributes in his honor.
Oh, yes!!! I forgot that about your spot of the woods! Def let us see…
We didn’t have that many books growing up — the libarary was our main source for reading. But I had a my very own copy of The Alphabet Book (Aunt Annie’s Alligator, Zizzer Zazzer Zuzz). And the aforementioned Sneeches book.
Added photo- Mount Tom in Holyoke/Easthampton. Inspiration for the Grinch’s mountain. And no apologies. It’s a lovely Seussical birthday poem.
I looooove the Grinch. The Cutest Preschooler Ever does, too, but happens to prefer the version we saw as kids over the Jim Carrey version. He also loved Hop on Pop when he was a baby. We had to read it over and over and over. My personal favorite is Green Eggs and Ham. I would not like them here or there, I would not like them anywhere!
TCPE clearly has great taste. I love Jim Carrey as a general rule, but that movie? Um, no in a big, big way.
LOVE Grinch, though. Definitely my fav. My girls love Max the most (the dog).
My favorite is Horton, and while I prefer the book, in THAT case, I like the Jim Carrey movie. Thought they did a nice job with that one.
Max the dog! Poor, long-suffering, adorable Max.
I’ve always wanted a dog like Max!
We did Wocket in My Pocket over and over and over… I think the kids liked the made-up words most of all.
I do love the Grinch cartoon (not the abomination known as the movie), but like the cartoon better than the book. I think it’s the Boris Karloff effect.
My favorite is How the Grinch Stole Christmas, followed closely by Green Eggs and Ham. I bought the Grinch on DVD this year–now I can watch it whenever I want!
We used to have Grinch on VHS. Sigh. Need to spring for DVD.
Now I’m singing the Grinch Song… “He’s a mean one…. Mr. Grinch….”
“I wouldn’t touch you with a 39 and a half foot pole…”
LOVE that song!
We still refer to “roast beef” as “roast beast.”
So do we. Every Christmas we have to have the Roast Beast. LOLOLOLOLOL “And he, yes the Grinch, he carved the roast beast.”
