Fashion Friday: Golden Globes Whine Report

by Sherri Browning Erwin on January 22, 2010

So we already talked about some of the gowns in The Good and The Bad on Sunday. Let’s see the rest, shall we?

It seems a lot of the looks were up for debate. No two expert sources (E!, People, In Touch, Us, Entertainment Weekly, Go Fug Yourself) seem to agree on who was actually good or bad. Some of my least favorites drew kudos (Kate Hudson, Meryl Streep). Some of my most favorites have been dissed (Sandra Bullock, Drew Barrymore, Penelope Cruz). So it comes down to us, dear readers. Who do we love? What do we hate? I’m crowning us as the definitive source.

Toni Collete looked classic in gold, to match her award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, the Diablo Cody penned  United States of Tara (never seen it).

Jennifer Aniston, in boring black (she needs to mix it up a little, but at least she gives us nothing to criticize– except for maybe the potentially hooha-baring high slit) apparently needs Gerard Butler’s expert assessment on her gams. Rumor has it that these two were snogging all over the place, all night long.

Tina Fey usually sticks to basic black, but she shook it up with this weird ensemble at the Globes, and I think it was a huge mistake. Especially since it started raining and she ended up looking like she was caught out in Mary Poppins’s underthings.  One of the worst for me.

The absolute worst? That honor might go to Mariah Carey, who also wore basic black but managed to accessorize with her own globes. Not appealing to me, but maybe some of the guys liked it?

But the worst, by far, for me was Chloe Sevigny (winner, for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series- Big Love). Behold.

Now here’s the problem: It is Chloe Sevigny. Chloe loves fashion, and often makes outlandish choices just for effect, like a younger Tilda Swinton. She’s unique. I kind of like that. But this purple thing was a mess, just a big ruffle tablecloth shapeless sort of mess. That apparently hugs in all the right places, if one has something they wanted to subtly showcase, like a pair of superfirm perky ones. Is it the worst? I think so. Here’s what she changed into for the afterparty:

Cute, right? It’s still a little wacky, but not bad really. And it shows off her real asset, those fantastic legs. Chloe has great legs. She should have just worn this one and forgot about the purple, if you ask me. (She didn’t, more the pity).

So what do you all think? Best dressed? I’m saying Sandra Bullock. Even though she made some worst lists as well as some best lists and her dress is made of a manmade sparkly fabric not unlike my Senior Prom dress (which was white, same fabric). I love the color, the way it fits her, the transparent sort-of-hidden leg slit, and the fact that I just love Sandra lately. I hope she wins the Best Actress Oscar for The Blind Side.

Worst? I’m sticking with Chloe Sevigny, with Tina Fey, Mariah Carey, and Kate Hudson as close runner ups.

Go back to check out The Good and The Bad, then check back here and let me know your choices. Feel free to write in someone I may have missed (Christina Hendricks, Sigourney Weaver, Cher…).

Oh, and for me, Drew Barrymore’s was on the bad side. Those things attached to her shoulder and hip ruined the dress for me. I kept looking at them. They were like growths. ick.

I was torn on those, too. Strangely, my daughter (who hates fashion and criticizes me for talking fashion, by the way) explained to me that it gave the dress interest and the shoulder and the hip accents showed a continuity that flowed. I said, “HUH?!” Methinks she protests too much.

For the first time in like maybe two-thousand years — yes I’m that old–I didn’t watch the Globes. (Lol on the Mariah Carey remark, Sherri). But from the pics I’ve seen –I’d have to go with Jennifer Garner or Penelope Cruz. Classic panache. And I actually snorted over Mary Poppins underwear–so I vote for Sherri as a red carpet commentator at the Oscars. Please!!!!!!

My favorite was Jennifer Garner–I loved her dress and her hair and who has a cuter smile than her?? She just looked perfectly put together, from head to toe. Very polished. And about looking polished–I don’t understand how some of these actresses can wear $50,000 couture gowns, drip with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of jewels, yet their hair looks like they came from the grocery store, or the gym, or the beach. This year wasn’t as bad for that, but there were still a few who looked to me as if they’d just come from spinning class.

Jennifer Garner did look awesome. Wicked awesome, as we would say here in MA. And Penelope Cruz was another favorite. There were some bedheads in the bunch, as always. (Toni Colette, perhaps).

Actually, I’ve never understood why Chloe Sevigny is considered some kind of fashion icon. I can’t say I’ve ever thought anything she’s worn looks particularly good. Maybe I’m just old.

She always looks odd. Not really good. Just odd. Not sure that’s how I would want to be known. I’m going for schlumpy, apparently.

I thought that dress was hideous, and then she went on an on about the poor escort who stepped on her stupid-to-begin-with train.

I thought Meryl looked good. I thought Sandra Bullock looked amazing.

Meryl did look good, but would have been so much better for me had she chosen two short sleeves or two long ones. That one short-one long didn’t do it for me, and the belt seemed out of place. But she has looked worse, and she’s gorgeous.
