The Cutting Edge – Good Buy Tuesday…

by Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck on December 29, 2009

There’s something bizarre about talking about good buys in the days following the biggest commercial/retail season of the year. As if you’re saying, “hey, did all your gifts suck? Well, go get this!” Or, perhaps, you’re just saying, “Hey, need something to buy with that gift card…?”

If it’s the latter, then I have a deal for you. And, no, it’s not on sale, but it seems like a dang good price to me, and well worth it if you need it.

Yes, folks, I’m talking about a can opener.

Seriously.

So here’s the thing. Not too long ago, my mom had a stroke. She’s recently been released from rehab and is living back at her house with assistance from various social agencies who help with therapy, bathing, meals, etc. Mentally, she’s fine. But she still has a way to go in physical rehab, and certain things are difficult. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to make her house more user-friendly, but sometimes you just forget things, and the other day I realized in a complete Doh! moment that she wasn’t eating certain foods because, well, she couldn’t get to them. They were in cans! And she couldn’t use her can opener, which is the same kind we have–the hand crank kind.

Now, I’ve had electric can openers before and for various reasons, I never liked them. I got fed up, got the hand crank kind, and lived happily ever after … until the kids got older and wanted to cook–yay–but don’t have the strength to hold it closed tight enough for a clean cut. That’s the same problem my mom has.

It being before Christmas, I decided that would be the perfect gift, and went on a hunt for a can opener. And as I was, I realized, too, that my mom must be having a heck of a time feeding the cat–because those poptop lids can be a pain, too.

So I wanted the kind of can opener that opens on the outside of the can.

Off I trotted to Williams-Sonoma, figuring they had to have one. Nope. So I sat in my car, used my Amazon iPhone app (my iPhone…now there was a good buy!) and searched can openers. Found one with a good price (under $30), and great ratings right off the bat, ordered, and boom, got it the Wednesday before Christmas.

And the best part? Mom loves it, and it works great. So great, in fact, that I ordered one for myself (it should arrive tomorrow). Now the kids have no excuse to cook for the family…bwahahahahahahahahahaha

Check it out, it works fabulously! I went a little nuts at my mom’s testing it out!

Love that can opener. I checked it out – and ordered two, one for us, one for my aunt, who has problems opening cans. LOL! Thanks, Julie

I haven’t used an electric can opener in ages, but this one looks cool! I’m such a gadget hound. No good buys to talk about here, but have been reading some good books. Finished Captive of Sin by Anna Campbell and loved it, and just now finished the Bronze Horseman and thought it was interesting.

Finished The Count of Monte Cristo a week or so ago (been reading it forever!) and am in the middle of the latest JD Robb. Listened to Tim Curry’s reading of A Christmas Carol recently, and started listening to The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, which is awesome.

We have the Graveyard book (bought it for my kid), and my fingers have been itching to get ahold of it. I’ve got The Help, which I want to read… and the second in Nora’s bridal trilogy…. Might possibly look to something more dense, though. I try and read one of *those* books over the holidays because it’s the only time I can. Would love to hear Tim Curry do the Christmas Carol.

I started reading the Count of Monte Cristo a few months ago. Started. Didn’t get far. It’s really not my kind of book. I don’t know what I expected… just not that. I did enjoy the movie. I can’t seem to connect with the writing, though.

Very cool can opener. I should get one for my grandparents. Tuesday is also Good Books day and don’t you have a new one out, Julie? Turned, the third book in the Blood Lily Chronicles.

I use the original crank type can opener because I only have 1 outlet in my kitchen that is usable :( However this is an excellent buy from amazon and free super saver shipping…Yippee!

My mom has two outlets, one entirely inconvenient, but we got her one of those 3 way splitter thingies
